WATCH: Marnus Labuschagne pulls off a sensational catch to dismiss Saif Hassan in BAN vs AUS 1st ODI

Australia and Bangladesh are currently battling it out in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. The visitors won the toss and elected to field first in what is a landmark occasion, as it marks Australia’s first bilateral ODI series on Bangladeshi soil in 15 years.

Australia are being led by stand-in captain Josh Inglis with regular skipper Mitchell Marsh sidelined due to an ankle injury, while explosive opener Travis Head has been rested for the tour. The contest got off to an exciting start as the Australian fielders backed their bowlers with sharp work in the field, highlighted by a stunning catch from Marnus Labuschagne.

Marnus Labuschagne takes a brilliant catch to dismiss Saif Hassan

The breakthrough arrived on just the second ball of the second over when Nathan Ellis tempted Bangladesh opener Saif Hassan into a defensive push outside off stump. The delivery was full and moved away slightly after pitching, drawing an outside edge from the left-hander.

What followed left players and spectators stunned. Positioned at second slip, Marnus Labuschagne reacted instantly as the ball flew low towards his right. The Australian batter launched himself across, extending one hand and managing to pouch the ball just inches above the turf. With the ball dying rapidly, it looked destined to fall short, but Labuschagne’s athletic effort ensured Australia claimed an early wicket.

The dismissal gave Ellis his first success of the innings and immediately lifted the energy levels in the Australian camp. Labuschagne’s catch was widely applauded as one of the standout moments of the match so far, showcasing the high standards Australia are known for in the field.

Australia fight back through Nathan Ellis and Matt Renshaw

Despite losing Hassan cheaply, Bangladesh recovered strongly through a positive partnership at the top of the order. Opener Tanzid Hasan took the attack to the Australian bowlers and played an entertaining knock of 54 from just 44 deliveries. His aggressive approach helped the hosts gain momentum during the powerplay and put pressure back on the visitors.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto then anchored the innings with a composed 67, ensuring Bangladesh continued to build partnerships through the middle overs. His measured innings provided stability after the early wicket and allowed the home side to establish a solid platform.

Australia gradually clawed their way back into the contest thanks to disciplined bowling. Ellis continued to make an impact with the ball and finished among the wickets, while Matt Renshaw also chipped in effectively to keep Bangladesh from running away with the game. At the time of writing, Bangladesh were 195/4 after 37 overs. Ellis and Renshaw had claimed two wickets each for the visitors, helping restrict the scoring rate during the middle phase of the innings.
