Algeria strike late to beat Netherlands

The Netherlands continued to warm up for the World Cup with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Algeria in Rotterdam.

Feyenoord forward Anis Hadj Moussa had the decisive word on his home stadium with an 86th-minute winner when he cut inside onto his left foot and curled home brilliantly.

Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs made his debut as a half-time substitute as Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman made nine changes during the game.

Roma forward Donyell Malen missed a golden chance in the first half when he sliced a shot wide from close range.

The Dutch were quarter-finalists four years ago and will be up against Japan, Sweden and Tunisia in Group F

Algeria face Argentina, Austria and Jordan in Group J in their first World Cup since 2014.

Italy, who missed out on qualifying once again through the play-offs, beat Luxembourg 1-0 thanks to a goal from Inter forward Pio Esposito.

DR Congo, who face up against Colombia, Portugal and Uzbekistan in Group K, were held to a 0-0 draw by Denmark in Belgium.

The Congolese team have been preparing for the tournament in ‌Belgium as almost all of their players and staff are based in Europe.

Denmark, who missed ‌out on World Cup qualification ‌after a penalty shootout loss to the Czech Republic in the play-offs in March, twice hit the woodwork with Joakim Maehle striking the post with a curling shot and captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg hitting the crossbar with a long-range effort early in the second half.
