Marvel unveils a first glimpse at the X-Men‘s new villain, who resembles some of mutantkind’s most dangerous enemies. Mutants constantly face complex societal threats, cosmic forces, and technological horrors that attack them from all sides. These enemies generally divide into four major camps: ideological rivals from within their own species who challenge Charles Xavier’s dream of peaceful coexistence, ruthless geneticists and mad scientists who view mutant biology as a resource to be harvested, terrifying cosmic entities, and unstoppable mechanical forces engineered by a fearful human society.

Specific examples within these categories illustrate the terrifying diversity of X-Men villains. Magneto’s extremist philosophy makes him fluctuate between a bitter enemy and a close ally to the X-Men. The realm of twisted science is dominated by Mister Sinister, who used alien technology to transform himself into an overpowered mutate obsessed with the X-Gene. When conflict ascends into deep space, the X-Men confront cosmic threats like the world-consuming Dark Phoenix, as well as the horrific hive-mind of the Brood. Finally, the ultimate threat to mutant survival is human fear, the engine behind deadly creations like the Sentinels, Nimrod, and Bastion.

Years after the collapse of their utopia, the X-Men are back facing a very familiar kind of enemy.

The X-Men’s New Villain Is Religious Zealot Repent

The Uncanny X-Men have faced a variety of dark and occult threats, from Lady Darkhold and her team of supernatural monsters to Shuvahrak, the eternal overlord of the forlorn city of Penumbra. Now, the Louisiana team faces a new kind of spiritual antagonist. The cover for The Uncanny X-Men #33, which kicks off the “Wild Ride” arc, reveals a first glimpse at Repent, a die-hard religious figure who may hold a deep hatred for mutantkind and may intend to attack all mutants, starting with one of the X-Men’s main factions.

Beyond his physical appearance, little else is known about Repent. Repent appears to be a human preacher with an eyepatch on his right eye, and white streaks on top and on the sides of his hair. He wears a black turtleneck and a dark coat, and he carries what seems to be a bible. Whether Repent possesses superpowers or not remains to be revealed, but the X-Men’s long history has repeatedly proven that mutants’ enemies don’t need enhanced abilities to pose a threat to their entire species.

The X-Men Have A Long History With Ultra-Religious Villains

Reverend Stryker Isn’t The Only Antagonist Of His Kind

Chris Claremont’s 1982 masterpiece God Loves Man Kills established the precedent for mutants’ conflict with overblown religion through Reverend William Stryker, a charismatic fundamentalist televangelist who views mutant biology as an explicit abomination and a sign of Satanic corruption. Stryker channels his immense religious authority to form the Purifiers, the militant crusade of fanatical followers who commit heinous acts in the name of divine salvation. This psychological and structural abuse takes an intensely personal turn with fiery Scottish minister Reverend Craig Sinclair, who subjects his biological daughter, Rahne Sinclair a.k.a. Wolfsbane, to brutal physical and mental torture.

This dangerous weaponization of belief reached its peak in the early 2000s with the introduction of the Church of Humanity, the radical offshoot of the Friends of Humanity that operates out of a massive cathedral headquarters in Montana under the guidance of the Supreme Pontiff. The Church tests the limits of censorship with a coordinated assault that concludes with several prominent mutants being violently crucified on the front lawn of the Xavier Institute. The cult’s fanatical methodology culminates in a highly controversial plot where they attempt to brainwash the devoutly Catholic X-Man Nightcrawler to install him as a fake Pope.

Paradoxically, the X-Men’s struggle with religious extremism isn’t solely an external threat, as it actively mirrors itself within the mutant community through self-proclaimed deities who demand worship. Apocalypse believes himself the ultimate immortal architect of mutantkind, with a survival-of-the-fittest philosophy enforced by his hand-selected Horsemen. Likewise, Exodus is a powerful, centuries-old mutant knight who treats mutant superiority as a holy crusade and views Genosha and Krakoa as sacred promised lands, regardless of the implications.
