The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is almost inarguably one of the best RPGs of all time, and thousands of players continue to flock back to the play the base game, despite no additional content from Bethesda since the Anniversary Edition in 2021.
That said, mods really are the way to keep the experience fresh, and the game has one of the biggest communities of developers anywhere. Almost 15 years on from its original release, downloads are dropping all the time, and there’s one you might have missed that’s well worth considering for your next playthrough.
Over on Nexus Mods, you can find the download page for Dragonbreak – A Wabbajack Modlist, which compiles a bunch of interesting mods into one convenient download, all of which are designed to make it feel as much like an old-school RPG as possible.
That means that it really isn’t afraid to make some genuinely startling changes to the base Skyrim experience. That includes adding classes to proceedings, allowing you to really dial in on the character you want, rather than the usual stealth archer, jack-of-all-trades approach.
Skills have also been overhauled, and there are a ton of specializations to get to grips with as well. The inspiration for the mods included in the list undoubtedly comes from some of the earlier games in the series, with some important features from releases like Oblivion and Morrowind included. The full list of mods included in the modlist is as follows:
Dragonbreak – Bodyslide
Dragonbreak – DynDOLOD
Dragonbreak – Grass Cache
Dragonbreak – ParallaxGen
Dragonbreak – Synthesis
Dragonbreak – TexGen
Dragonbreak – xLodGen Output
Dragonbreak Proprietary Patch
Now, obviously, the changes it makes to all the game’s systems are such a departure from the norm that it may be a little jarring, and not for everyone. That said, there’s no risk to downloading it for free and giving it a go. It also runs very smoothly by all accounts, and acts as a really convenient way of transforming your game the next time out.
Given that Bethesda really hasn’t been very forthcoming about giving us any more information on the next game in the series, it really is very nice that the modding community is doing such a sterling job of keeping Skyrim relevant and interesting. Though there absolutely isn’t a timeline on it, it would be a huge surprise if we didn’t get Elder Scrolls VI news at some point in the next year or two, so hopefully not too much longer to hold on.
