IPL 2026: Sanjay Bangar explains how KKR can pull off a greatest comeback in tournament’s history

The race for the IPL 2026 playoffs has taken another dramatic twist, and this time, the spotlight is firmly on the defending spirit and resurgence of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). After spending a major part of the season struggling near the bottom of the table, KKR have suddenly transformed into one of the most dangerous teams in the competition.

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar believes the three-time champions are capable of producing one of the greatest comebacks in IPL history if they continue their remarkable late-season surge.

KKR have won four matches in a row, dramatically improving their playoff chances and restoring belief within the camp. Their recent performances have showcased a complete turnaround in both batting and bowling departments, especially with the spin attack once again becoming a major weapon.

Speaking on Jio Hotstar, Bangar explained how momentum at the business end of the tournament can completely change the destiny of a side.

Sanjay Bangar highlights KKR’s improving balance

According to Bangar, KKR are finally beginning to look like a settled and confident unit after weeks of inconsistency. He pointed out that the side now appears more balanced, with batters delivering consistently and bowlers executing plans with far greater discipline. Bangar particularly praised the effectiveness of the spin department, which has historically played a huge role in Kolkata’s success over the years.

“KKR have won four matches in a row. Their team balance is looking solid. The spin attack has regained its bite, and the batting unit is firing consistently. They are peaking at the right time, which is what matters most in a long tournament,” Bangar said.

The former India coach also stressed that teams entering the final phase of the tournament with confidence and rhythm often become the toughest opponents during the playoffs.

“Teams that build momentum towards the business end often go deep into the playoffs. KKR are in a very good space right now. That’s why their playoff probability has gone up significantly,” he added.

A historic comeback on the cards for KKR

Despite their revival, KKR still have a difficult road ahead. The side currently sits eighth on the IPL 2026 points table with nine points from ten matches. However, with four league matches still remaining, qualification is mathematically within reach.

Bangar believes winning all four remaining games could turn KKR’s campaign into one of the most memorable recovery stories the IPL has ever witnessed.

“If they win their remaining four games, they will pull off one of the greatest comebacks in IPL history. From the bottom of the table to the top four, that would be a remarkable turnaround. It will take a special effort, but with the form they are in, it looks possible,” Bangar stated.

The timing of KKR’s resurgence has made the playoff race even more intense, especially with several teams still battling for limited qualification spots.

Big challenge awaits against RCB

KKR’s next assignment will be a crucial clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) scheduled to take place in Raipur today. The contest could significantly influence the playoff equation for both sides. A victory would not only extend Kolkata’s winning streak but also strengthen their growing belief that a top-four finish is achievable despite their difficult start to the season.

With confidence returning and momentum firmly on their side, KKR suddenly look like a team no opponent would want to face in the closing stages of IPL 2026.
