An underseen World War II series has finally resurfaced and will officially stream in the United States for the very first time.
The Second World War has been the subject of some great films, but the historical event has also been cannon fodder for some of the best TV shows of all time – such as HBO’s Band of Brothers (2001) and its companion series, HBO’s The Pacific (2010) and Apple TV’s Masters of the Air (2024), all produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. While these three typically dominate the discussion of World War II on television, there are also several underseen series that explore the brutal reality of the war, one of which is now coming to streaming in the U.S.
8 Best World War 2 TV Shows Ever, Ranked
The Second World War has acted as the setting or primary influence for some of the most incredible television series ever produced.
Eight years after it first premiered, the Das Boot series will finally stream in the U.S. for the first time. Serving as a sequel to Wolfgang Petersen’s 1981 film, the series focuses on the events of World War II on land and sea, following the crew of a U-boat and a young German woman caught between the Gestapo and the French Resistance.
Now, according to Deadline, all four seasons of Das Boot have been picked up by the streaming service MHz Choice. While season 1 has previously been available on Hulu, MHz Choice will now stream the complete series, including seasons that have never been available before in the U.S.
Season 1 arrives on the platform on July 7, followed by season 2 on August 4, which will debut with two episodes before continuing with weekly releases. Premiere dates for seasons 3 and 4 have not yet been announced. Martha Benyam, Chief Operating Officer, Kino Lorber Media Group, and Michael Bonner, President, NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution, shared the following statements:
Martha Benyam: A period drama with modern echoes, Das Boot is a powerful series that’s both timely and timeless, stirring and relevant in today’s world, and we’re thrilled to bring the full series to MHz Choice viewers starting this summer. We’re grateful to NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution and Sky for their partnership to bring all episodes of Das Boot to American audiences and we hope to be the U.S. home to more Sky original series in the future.
Michael Bonner: Das Boot is a gripping, character-driven series that is an exceptional addition to MHz Choice’s lineup and exemplifies the kind of globally resonant storytelling that connects with audiences around the world.
Das Boot was a big-budget series that brought together an impressive ensemble cast, including Franz Dinda, Tom Wlaschiha, Rick Okon, Rainer Bock, and Fleur Geffrier. It also featured Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men), and two-time Emmy nominee Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex, Fleishman Is in Trouble) in prominent roles.
Das Boot season 1 received positive reviews, resulting in an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics praising it for retaining the intensity of its film predecessor while expanding its ensemble with greater depth, resulting in a gripping international production. Season 1 also has a 77% audience score, and while seasons 2 and 3 don’t have critics’ scores, they do have 71% and 57% audience scores.
With the Das Boot series streaming in the United States for the first time, American audiences will finally be able to experience its claustrophobic submarine tension and profound human drama.
