When Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 finally arrives, Peter Parker and Miles Morales are going to have their hands full. The last game set up Doctor Octopus’ plan for revenge, Norman Osborn’s transformation into the Green Goblin, and the debut of Carnage. Kraven the Hunter might have offed a bunch of Spidey’s villains in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but there are always more waiting in the wings.
Of these three bad guys, Carnage is perhaps the most interesting within the context of Insomniac’s Spider-Man universe. We were introduced to Cletus Kasady via a lengthy side mission in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Here, Kasady has been reimagined as a Manson-esque cult leader, one who ultimately manages to get his hands on a sample of symbiote that Oscorp was transporting. What does he plan to do with this? Nothing good, I’d wager.
It’s unclear how big a role Carnage will play in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, if any. It’s worth noting there are still rumors of a Venom game in development, and Carnage would surely make more sense as the big bad in that game. I also wonder how Insomniac would balance Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, and Carnage without doing any of them dirty. Carnage is surely more than a side-mission villain, right?
While of this remains up in the air, one Reddit user has provided a really strong argument for Carnage’s design in his inevitable appearance in a future Insomniac Marvel game. Given the cult vibes of this new incarnation of the character, and their obsession with fire, Andy_Trevino posits we could end up with a Carnage that looks a lot like the Dark Carnage/Prophet of Knull. This version of Carnage first appeared in 2019 as part of a storyline in which Cletus became an emissary for Knull, the god of symbiotes. Here, Carnage is a taller, much more skeletal figure with glowing orange eyes. Pretty imposing stuff, and a potentially strong look for the character in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.
One fan responded: “The lanky Slenderman Carnage would be a great choice for this universe’s Carnage.”
“I like your idea,” another added. “Additionally, while some people might be against it, I get the feeling Carnage is going to tower over Peter and Miles but still slightly shorter and skinnier than Venom.”
Whatever direction Insomniac takes Carnage in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 or Venom, I just hope they remember this guy is supposed to be a genuinely terrifying serial killer with a scary amount of power. Don’t shy away from that, please.
