Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Transformers #31

For decades, Megatron has been one of the most iconic villains in sci-fi. As the leader of the Decepticons, Megatron seeks nothing less than total domination over Cybertron and the end of the Autobots. Now, he’s just been given a brand-new upgrade to do just that in the Transformers’ Energon Universe.

Optimus Prime is typically the leader of the Autobots, possessing the power granted by the Matrix of Leadership. However, recent developments in the Energon Universe have seen Optimus Prime giving up that power to another, leaving him reduced as simply “Optimus.”

Although Optimus still intends to lead and defend Earth from Megatron and his forces, it certainly doesn’t help that his rival has just unlocked the full power of his own Matrix in the newly released Transformers #31 from Robert Kirkman and Ludo Lullabi, a dark opposite to the better-known Matrix of Leadership.

Transformers Fully Reveals Megatron’s New “Matrix of Oppression”

The brand-new Tranformers #31 gives us the full unveiling of Megatron’s new weapon: “The Matrix of Oppression”.

Previously introduced in Transformers #19, the mysterious dark Matrix was confirmed to be the Matrix of Leadership’s opposite, while also being the source of power that allows Megatron to transform into his alt gun form, allowing him to dominate the minds of those who wield him (most notably Starscream).

Now, The Matrix of Oppression has been named, and the time has come for Megatron to fully unlock its power. Undergoing thousands of trials by combat within his mind, Megatron finally yields and is told that only through subjugation will he be able to finally learn the Matrix’s full power.

Like the Matrix of Leadership, which carries the essence of past Primes, the Matrix of Oppression similarly carries the spirits of past Decepticon leaders, a source of power Megatron finally has the chance to unlock. However, the end of Transformers #31 reveals that there are some pretty big strings attached with this dark new Matrix.

Megatron’s Matrix Comes With A New Form (And A New Master)

We also learn in this new issue whom Megaton is submitting to and must now serve indefinitely: Megatronus.

Also known as The Fallen, Megatronus was once one of the Primes before becoming the first Decepticon. As such, it makes sense that he’d be the one to offer the Matrix of Oppression and demand Megatron’s servitude. While it isn’t without difficulty, Megatron realizes he has no choice but to bow before Megatronus, accepting his role beneath his new master.

Now that Megatron has fully accepted the Matrix and its power, it looks as though he’ll be getting a brand-new form, seeing how the issue ends with the Decepticon leader being encased in a crystalline cocoon while his followers bear witness. Just like Optimus became smaller and lost his face shield after giving up the Matrix of Leadership, it looks as though Megatron will soon become even stronger and look far more intimidating.

Remarkably, the Autobots were already at a severe disadvantage, with Optimus having recently relinquished the Matrix of Leadership to Elita One in previous issues. Becoming Elita Prime, she then departed to continue the war on Cybertron with a significant portion of the Autobot forces on Earth.

While there is some hope with Optimus recently forming an early alliance with G.I. Joe to share intel and support against the Decepticons and Cobra, Megatron’s new upgrade (and serving a dark new master) couldn’t be happening at a worse time. With any luck, Optimius and his fellow Autobots still on Earth will soon get some major upgrades and/or backup of their own in future issues.
