Steam is very much the premier storefront for PC gamers in 2026, with thousands of offerings across each genre, from the biggest AAA developers all the way down to solo efforts. Of all of those genres, RPGs remain arguably the most popular overall, and it’s easy to understand why.

Whether you’re into spacefaring in the most remote and isolated corners of space, or want to rise from plague-riddled Medieval peasant all the way up to King, there’s something nice about living out the impossible. Happily, Steam has more picks in the genre that any other, and you might not even have to spend any of your hard-earned cash to get involved.

The platform has a bunch of free-to-play RPGs that are well worth sinking an inordinate amount of time into, so here are some of the best.

Path of Exile

Built in the same mold as the king of the ARPG genre, Diablo, Path of Exile arguably does it even better than that. Though there is very much a learning curve to this one that could put people off in favor of the more accessible Diablo IV, if you do manage to push past that, this is a special game. The deep systems and thrilling minute-to-minute gameplay are more than enough to keep players hooked, and there are plenty who still return to it as a mainstay every day.

Warframe

This writer’s personal favorite game on the list, the comparison for Warframe has always been Destiny 2. That arguably does both games a disservice, though, because as someone who has thousands of hours in both, they are very different offerings to play. Warframe is all about switching into different combat units (the titular Warframes), which give you unique abilities and devastating battlefield combat capabilities. It’s incredibly fast-paced with great story elements, and every ounce of it is free, with no real need to participate in microtransactions.

Old School RuneScape

The game on this list that likely needs no introduction to many of you, RuneScape in its older form is arguably the definitive version of the release to play in 2026. If you like party hats, clicking, exploring a big and lore-rich open-world and interacting with other players, it really does have just as much magic today as it did when it released for the first time all those years ago.

EVE Online

EVE Online is the game that occasionally crops up in the mainstream news for the insane battles that take place between players, where hundreds turn up in their spaceships to fight for territory over the course of days. It’s a brilliant world, and while it can be a bit like keeping track of a spreadsheet at times, if you can become part of the community, there’s arguably no better place to be in gaming.

Limbus Company

Turn-based RPGs play so differently from their classic open-world action brethren that it almost feels like they shouldn’t be considered part of the same genre at all. Limbus Company is a great example of the former, with realtime brawling elements that really help it stand out against most of the competition.

Where Winds Meet

Head back to ancient China for this action-adventure RPG, which arguably has the prettiest graphics on this list overall. Where Winds Meet embraces the Wuxia style of gameplay, while at the same time giving us no pay-to-win microtransactions in a genre that is so often dogged by them. The player base is also very healthy and the game relatively new, so there’s plenty going on if you want to get in on the ground floor.
