One of Apple TV‘s most compelling sci-fi shows is all set to return in 2026, and, this time around, its story will officially hit a major turning point.
Getting sci-fi adaptations right on the small screen is not an easy feat. However, it seems like Apple TV has mastered the art of translating some of the most popular sci-fi books to the small screen. From ambitious space operas to post-apocalyptic thrillers, Apple TV has delivered brilliant adaptations to a wide variety of sci-fi books.
Ranking among some of Apple TV’s best sci-fi shows, Dark Matter is based on Blake Crouch’s book of the same name. After having a solid season 1 run, Dark Matter will return with season 2 on Apple TV on April 28, 2026. Interestingly, the show’s narrative has already reached a major turning point after season 1’s ending, setting the stage for season 2 to be a risky but exciting follow-up.
Unlike Season 1, Dark Matter Season 2 Will Have An Original Story
Dark Matter season 1 closely adapts its source material while introducing a few changes to the original Blake Crouch story. Like the book, the show walks through a bizarre set of parallel worlds and even compels viewers with some brilliant, well-timed twists towards the end. However, it gradually expands the book’s vision by focusing more on a few side characters and setting them up for more prominent parts in season 2.
Interestingly, Dark Matter season 1 exhausts almost all story beats from the original book. Owing to this, in season 2, it is expected to extend beyond the book’s story since the original novel does not have any direct follow-ups.
More often than not, extending beyond the source material is a risky endeavor for most shows. Some of the greatest series, like Game of Thrones, have even struggled to maintain narrative momentum after exhausting their source material. Dark Matter, however, was seemingly well-prepared for this transition even before its first season landed on Apple TV.
In its nine-episode runtime, the show does a brilliant job of making good use of its multiversal exploration of man’s struggle to return to his family. While Dark Matter is not as groundbreaking as movies like Everything Everywhere All At Once, it proves to be a fun ride for viewers who love shows that explore how even the smallest actions can ripple into the biggest consequences.
Interestingly, despite exploring a wide range of parallel scenarios, the show only seems to scratch the surface of its overarching storytelling vision. Its main character, Jason, and his family only start to realize what they can achieve through their multiversal travels before the show’s credits start rolling.
Not to mention, even some of the side characters in the show only begin to discover the possibility of traveling from one parallel world to another in its final moments. With so many fascinating story setups in its final moments, Dark Matter season 1 ensures that its next installment has a lot of stories to tell even though its source material has been completely exhausted.
Dark Matter Season 2 Is In Safe Hands
One of Dark Matter‘s biggest strengths is that its original novel’s author, Blake Crouch, is its showrunner. As the Apple TV series’ showrunner, Blake Crouch, not only improved many aspects of the book in season 1 but also ensured that he left enough room for another season to see the light of day. Most shows struggle after exhausting their source material because their creators end up drifting too far away from the vision of the original author.
Apple TV’s Dark Matter will not meet the same fate because its showrunner is the author of its source material.
While many shows end up extending beyond their original books, it is rare to see the original author expand his own literary vision through a completely different medium of storytelling. Blake Crouch did an incredible job of translating his own work to the small screen in Dark Matter‘s season 1. Owing to this, the Apple TV show’s season 2, which is expected to premiere on August 28, 2026, is incredibly exciting.
