J. Jonah Jameson Confirms The DC Hero He’d Hate Just As Much As Spider-Man

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Superman/Spider-Man #1

While J. Jonah Jameson has long been a staple of the Spider-Man mythos, we now officially know the DC hero whom the editor-in-chief of The Daily Bugle would hate just as much as Marvel’s first Webslinger.

As seen in DC & Marvel’s new Superman/Spider-Man #1, one of the crossover’s awesome backup stories features an exciting debate between The Daily Bugle and The Daily Planet in “Bias” by Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott. In this shared Marvel/DC universe, Jameson makes it perfectly clear which DC hero he’d never trust under any circumstances.

J. Jonah Jameson Reveals He’d Never Support Batman (For The Same Reason He Hates Spider-Man)

Hosted by Gotham City’s Jack Ryder, “Bias” sees The Daily Bugle’s J. Jonah Jameson going head-to-head with The Daily Planet’s Lois Lane.

Naturally, the debate’s main topic is The Daily Bugle’s years of negative reporting on Spider-Man despite his demonstrated heroism, and it’s here where J. Jonah Jameson lays out his full case, confirming that he doesn’t actually have a problem with superheroes in general, but those who specifically wear masks.

For Jameson, the argument is simple: masks equal a lack of accountability and mistrust. He doesn’t care for the argument that it’s to protect loved ones, insisting that someone who hides their face will always have suspect motives. Case in point, Jameson calls out Batman as a “nutjob vigilante” he’d never trust for a single second.

In Jameson’s eyes, Batman is just as problematic because of his cowl, effectively confirming that if The Daily Bugle were based in Gotham City, Batman would be painted as a threat and menace to the public, just like Spider-Man.

That being said, the true irony in the backup story is that Jameson lists Superman as a hero he actually supports, completely oblivious to the fact that the Man of Steel’s “mask” is his glasses and civilian identity as Clark Kent.

While Jameson’s logic is nothing if not consistent, it’s of course incredibly flawed. Nevertheless, it’s pretty cool to get the official confirmation that J. Jonah Jameson is anti-Batman. Thinking about the movies, that fact becomes even funnier considering that J. Jonah Jameson actor J.K Simmons also played Commissioner Gordon in the DCEU (one of Batman’s greatest allies).

J. Jonah Jameson Has Come A Long Way In The Marvel Universe

As great as this backup story is in the new Superman/Spider-Man crossover, it’s worth noting that J. Jonah Jameson has actually come a long way in recent years, at least in the mainline Marvel Universe.

For decades, Jameson spent the bulk of his career with The Daily Bugle attacking Spider-Man, determined to paint him as one of the city’s biggest dangers. However, things have very much changed. In recent years, Spider-Man and Jameson actually reconciled, especially after the Webslinger unmasked as Peter Parker. Since then, Jameson has massively changed his stance.

Now part of the Threats and Menaces media network (TNM), Jameson has been using his podcast to show the world that Spider-Man is indeed a hero, while also going after real threats. Case in point, Jameson used his podcast to go after Doctor Doom during his recent global takeover, one of the few media voices who actually stood against him and challenged his rule.

As great as this new reveal is about Jameson hating Batman, we should at least put it in context of the older, more classic Jameson that people are more familiar with, rather than the new and current Jameson, who’s honestly trying to make things right by Spider-Man in the pages of modern Marvel issues.

Superman/Spider-Man #1 is available now from DC Comics. Marvel’s Spider-Man/Superman #1 releases April 22nd.
