´Portugal look like any run-of-the-mill team´ without Ronaldo, claims Mourinho

Jose Mourinho claimed Portugal look like a “run-of-the-mill team” without Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks after a disappointing draw with Mexico.

Portugal played out a 0-0 stalemate with Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on Saturday, but they struggled to break down their hosts’ defence.

Ronaldo is currently sidelined with a muscle injury, and in his absence, Portugal managed 10 shots, but only two on target, with Goncalo Ramos leading the line.

Portugal accumulated 1.4 expected goals (xG), with Bruno Fernandes, Joao Cancelo and Pedro Neto all seeing chances go to waste in a frustrating performance for Roberto Martinez’s team.

With the World Cup coming up in June, Mourinho was scathing in his review of Portugal without their talisman.

“Take Cristiano Ronaldo out of the picture and Portugal look like any run-of-the-mill team,” he said.

“People keep asking us not to call him up. Well, he didn’t play, and you saw the result. No threat, no fear from the opposition. Just a team being put under pressure by Mexico.

“When Ronaldo is on the pitch, the opposition think twice. Without him, they don’t think at all.”

Portugal will face the United States in their next friendly on Tuesday, with Ronaldo set to be on the sidelines once more.

Should he recover from injury in time for the World Cup – which Portugal begin against either Congo DR or Jamaica on June 17 – Ronaldo will be making a record-breaking sixth appearance at the finals.
