For as emotional as the music genre can be, the most heartbreaking occurrence is when a great pop punk band breaks up. The hope is that they can find their way back together before ending up as a band that is impossible to see live. However, for all the times that it does happen, there are plenty of instances, including in the ’90s, where bands became forgotten. Even bands that manage to come back together can find themselves on shaky ground, as seen by some of the 2000s’ chart-topping acts.

Nonetheless, most fans, especially the hardcore ones, would rather see their favorite groups give it another go than not try it at all. In some cases, it does work out great; plenty of pop punk bands return and are able to find the prominence they once had. With others, it remains to be seen if they will ever reunite and be what they once were. At the very least, there will always be memories of what was and the hit songs that made them sought after in the first place.

My Chemical Romance

At Least They Are Performing Together Again

To understand the greatness of My Chemical Romance, it can be as simple as checking out their Spotify page and seeing that their song “Teenagers” has over one billion streams. In their original run together, they had multiple platinum-selling albums, establishing them as the leaders of the Black Parade and the pop punk genre. The band, which formed in 2001, made an unforgettable impact, which is why when they broke up in 2013, after four albums, it was devastating.

Luckily, it wasn’t the end of the road for their time in the spotlight. Lead singer Gerard Way continued on with a solo career and even helped create a few comic series, including The Umbrella Academy, which became a Netflix adaptation. However, that didn’t stop fans who were eager to see the band back together. It finally happened in 2019, and even though they have released only one song since, they continue to perform shows, allowing their greatness to be experienced once more.

Modern Baseball

A Hiatus Has Left Fans In Limbo For Years

Formed in 2012, Modern Baseball quickly made an impact with their unique sound, feeling like a throwback to earlier days of the genre. They gained a following and didn’t hesitate when it came to releasing records. In less than five years, they had already put out three albums. This was an impressive pace, but things came to a halt in 2017. The band announced an indefinite hiatus, but it was not explained as a break-up.

Since then, it remains to be seen if they will ever reunite. According to Setlist.fm, their last show is still listed as occurring in October 2017. The most the band has done since is releasing the demo versions of their songs “Rock Bottom” and “Pothole” in 2024. It would be very unfortunate if they never got back together, as they provided great nostalgia for the early days of pop punk.

We Are The In Crowd

The Third Album Was Never Meant To Be

Being that there are not many female vocalists in the pop-punk genre, We Are the In Crowd was immediately able to set themselves apart with the strong voice of their lead singer, Tay Jardine. The band had no shortage of hits with songs such as “The Best Thing (That Never Happened)” and “Kiss Me Again,” which featured a collaboration with Alex Gaskarth from All Time Low. The band teased a third record in 2015, but it never materialized.

Instead, they announced a hiatus in 2016 before this record could ever see the light of day. Jardine then began a project under a new name, Sainte. Even so, the question remained whether We Are the In Crowd would properly reunite. Although it hasn’t been a full-blown reunion tour, they have appeared to play a couple of prominent festivals in 2021 and 2024. With even this small bit of activity, it’s enough to keep those who hope for new music someday optimistic.

Perhaps one of the toughest obstacles that Every Avenue faced was the period in which they began. With their formation occurring in 2003, they debuted at a time when many bands were also starting out. Nonetheless, they deserve to be remembered for all the hits they created. Songs such as “Tell Me I’m a Wreck” were pop-punk anthems. In fact, their second and third albums even landed on the Billboard 200.

Over the course of their three studio albums, Set Your Goals made a major impression on the pop punk genre. Their fast-paced style became a sought-after live act, but after less than a decade together, things started to fall apart. By May 2013, it appeared that the band had minimal hope of continuing, as various members went in their own directions. However, things would change only a few short years later, with Good Charlotte playing a major role.

After the band announced they were fully committing to being back together in 2015, they were ready to perform shows again in 2016. During this year, they were welcomed by Good Charlotte, who were starting a major tour. Since then, the band hasn’t performed much, but they have done a few shows over the years since their reformation. Most recently, they played a couple of shows in February 2025 for their California hometown crowd.

You Never Know Where They Will Play A Show

In impressive fashion, The Academy Is… was one of the bands that broke through among the slew of other great acts in the early 2000s. The band established their own brand with songs such as “About a Girl.” Each album performed well on the charts, and they even reached as high as the 17th position on the Billboard 200 with their third record. The sky was the limit for them, but it all came crashing down when they announced their disbandment in 2011.

Their breakup left one of the biggest feelings about what could have been since they were so successful, leading up to their end. Although they worked on solo projects, fans still wanted more from the band. In 2015, they reunited for a few shows, which were supposed to mark their conclusion. However, since 2022, they have appeared every so often to perform. Their return hasn’t led to anything too significant, but there is a sliver of hope now.

The Final Bow Has Been Taken

Over the course of their eight studio albums, there wasn’t much that Sum 41 didn’t accomplish. They had multiple platinum-selling records, had songs used in pop culture, such as “In Too Deep” for Cheaper By the Dozen, and featured celebrities in their music videos, such as actor Will Sasso. By all accounts, they became one of the premier bands in the genre, but it wasn’t enough to keep them together, as they officially ended in 2025.
