Great family TV shows used to look very different before one debuted, beginning a legacy that still continues today. Family-friendly series tended to be live-action sitcoms about the adventures of families, while kids shows, like Sesame Street, often centered on education through colorful puppetry and a friendly host. Taking a typical kids’ show setup and adding comedy that worked on several layers, with recognizable guest stars and a meta twist was a bizarre experiment that worked surprisingly well, and even the show’s intro revolutionized TV.

At first glance, The Muppet Show is similar to Sesame Street, which is understandable as the characters are created by the legendary Jim Henson. Not wanting to be typecast as a childrens’ entertainer, Henson created The Muppet Show with an older audience in mind. The Muppet Show‘s actors and celebrity cameos were a major draw for adults, but the iconic Muppets themselves were lovable fuzzy characters made to instantly appeal to children while offering a biting satire of the entertainment industry. Today’s viewers may see the formula as a recipe for success, but executives were skeptical at first.

ITV Debuted The Muppet Show In September 1976

Henson made two specials as pilots for the series, The Muppets Valentine Show and The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence, airing in 1974 and 1975. The former features Wally trying to overcome his writers’ block by talking about love with guest star Mia Farrow, which is closer to the format that would make The Muppet Show into one of the best TV shows of the 1970s. On the other hand, the latter pushed a few more boundaries, with the characters parodying the explicit content found on TV. Neither pilot was picked up, until ITV offered Henson a deal.

The Muppet Show first aired on ITV on September 5, 1976, and around 14 million viewers were watching by December. Just a few weeks later, in January 1977, The Muppet Show was either in demand or already being watched by over 100 countries. It earned a place in The Guinness Book of Records for its record-breaking weekly audience of 235 million, the biggest worldwide audience at the time, and the show is still considered a masterpiece despite being “really old.”

The Muppets Turned Kids TV Into Entertainment For The Whole Family

Today, virtually every great movie or TV show with a target audience of the entire family features jokes that work on several different levels, from Robin Williams’ rapid-fire impersonations in Disney’s Aladdin to Shrek‘s boundary-pushing wordplay (say “Lord Farquaad” fast.) The Muppet Show popularized the concept and the central premise, a variety show, allowed for several kinds of humor within a short period of time, from slapstick to satire, while the meta approach parodied the entertainment industry from within.

The Muppet Show‘s actors and celebrity cameos produced some of the show’s best moments, allowing celebrities the opportunity to play a different version of themselves, and giving the show an even wider viewership. This gives the biggest family TV show the rare opportunity to run indefinitely and still appeal to the entire family, giving The Muppet Show a real chance at a comeback.
