Warning: Major spoilers ahead for ObsessionObsession is easily one of the most disturbing horror films of the year. This theatrical debut from director Curry Barker has made waves with horror fans since it first premiered over the weekend. It’s currently earned 16 times its budget at the box office while also being hailed by critics and audiences.

What really drew audiences to this new film is its unique take on wishes in horror. It follows a fairly simple formula for these types of stories as Bear slowly begins to realize that a wish he made to make his crush, Nikki, love him takes a terrifying turn. However, it’s how the movie is executed that makes it the best take on this trope.

Obsession isn’t afraid to go all-out on its premise. There are constant scenes where Nikki’s obsession for Bear is pushed to its extremes. Plus, when the film explains how the One Wish Willow works, it makes the wish itself far more unsettling.

This film is absolutely relentless with its horror and refuses to let its audience breathe as Bear must face the consequences of his wish. However, there are some scenes that stand out more than others that make Obsession so disturbing to watch.

Nikki Talks In Her Sleep

In this unsettling moment, Bear tries to sneak out of the house so he can meet up with Sarah, his coworker who has a crush on him. As he tries to leave without Nikki waking up though, he hears her slowly talk to him. He turns to find that she’s actually talking to him in her sleep, telling him that she’s the real Nikki who’s being repressed by the version he wished for.

This is such a disturbing scene because it highlights that Nikki has no control over herself. She’s essentially forced to watch as a false version of her fawns over Bear. Plus, the way she begs Bear to kill her is so unsettling, since she sees death as the only true escape from her living nightmare.

Bear Calls Customer Support

At first glance, this scene doesn’t seem to be very scary. In fact, it feels far more comedic than anything. Bear calls customer support for One Wish Willow to see if he can alter his wish. However, the representative, played in a cameo by director Curry Barker, informs him that this isn’t something they can do.

Things take a far more sinister turn though, when the representative asks Bear if he’d like to talk to Nikki. This is when we start to hear her screaming in terror in the background as Bear quickly hangs up. It’s such an unsettling moment because it hints at Nikki’s fate while under the influence of Bear’s wish before she confirms it to him while talking in her sleep.

Nikki Cooks Sandy Into Bear’s Lunch

Bear’s cat, Sandy, is a common element found throughout Obsession. The movie begins with him finding her dead on his floor after she mistakenly ate a ton of his pills while looking for food. Sandy is then constantly referenced and even dug up by Nikki to build a shrine to her, much to Bear’s horror.

It all comes to a head when Bear goes to work while Nikki has the day off. She tells him that she made lunch for him. Inside, it’s an ordinary looking sandwich. However, when Sarah reads Bear the note she left for him, he quickly realizes that the meat in his food is actually Sandy.

This is a moment that many viewers knew would have something disturbing, since Nikki is the one that prepared the food. However, the fact it went as far as her feeding Bear his cat makes this far more frightening than anyone could have expected.

Nikki Kills Sarah

This is the most grotesque kill in the movie, and Curry Barker went all out on delivering something that will stay with audiences forever. When Bear is called to speak with Sarah late at night in her car, the two begin to talk about why Nikki has suddenly become infatuated with him despite her having a fling going with Bear’s friend, Ian.

The subject is then changed when Sarah tells Bear that she’s received her last admissions letter. As the two prepare to open it, Nikki slams her head into the driver’s side window, she places a brick on the steering wheel and slams Sarah’s head into it over-and-over. When she finishes, the image of Sarah’s head completely caved in with only a few teeth and an eyeball being intact is horrific.

It’s made even worse when it’s revealed later that Nikki has propped Sarah’s body up in Bear’s house during Obsession’s ending. However, it’s this visceral kill scene that stands out as pure nightmare fuel.

Nikki Waits For Bear To Come Home

This horrific two-part sequence is undeniably the most memorable part of Obsession. When Bear leaves for work, leaving Nikki behind, she says goodbye to him, then stands completely still. She doesn’t move a muscle. She even keeps her smile as she silently waits for him.

As she waits, it’s revealed that she won’t leave for anything, even to use the restroom as a strain of pee rolls down her leg. When Bear gets home, she’s completely covered in drool, vomit, and other fluids as she greets him. It’s a shocking sequence that shows just how horrific Nikki’s obsession for Bear has become.

This is undeniably Obsession‘s best scene. It’s shocking, unsettling, and absolutely disgusting. Above all, though, it’s disturbing; and given the movie’s plethora of equally shocking moments, this says a lot about Obsession‘s quality.
