4 Years Ago, This 2026 Golden Globe Award Winner Had One Of The Masked Singer’s Scariest Moments

The Masked Singer season 7 contestant Teyana Taylor took home the Golden Mask Trophy in 2022 as Firefly, after she had one of the mystery celebrity singing competition’s scariest moments, and now she’s gone on to win a Golden Globe Award. Teyana is a singer, actress, dancer, and choreographer, who got her start at age 15 when she choreographed Beyoncé’s “Ring the Alarm” video and signed a recording contract.

Teyana is also an actress who’s appeared in several films and TV shows, including the 2021 reality TV series, We Got Love Teyana & Iman, with her then-husband, Iman Shumpert. In 2026, Teyana won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture for her role as Perfidia Beverly Hills in the film, One Battle After Another. However, The Masked Singer fans will always remember Teyana for her scary onstage moment before her incredible win.

Teyana Taylor Choked Inside Of Her Masked Singer Season 7 Firefly Mask

During the Masked Singer season 7 premiere on March 9, 2022, Teyana made her debut as Firefly, singing “Ain’t Nobody” by Chaka Khan. She began her beautiful version of the song confidently, but then began coughing and appeared to be choking. The panelists–Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Nicole Scherzinger–called for help, and she was rushed off the stage to see the medic. It was one of the most frightening and shocking moments in the show’s history.

Teyana later revealed that, during her performance, her mask had come up under her chin, which made it really hard for her to breathe. She started to feel hot, and then had a panic attack. In addition, Teyana stated that the costume made her feel as though she was carrying an extra 30 pounds. Although she had a rough start to her performance, Teyana returned to the stage as Firefly, and eventually soared all the way to the finale.

Teyana Went On To Win The Masked Singer Season 7

Throughout The Masked Singer season 7, Teyana had many extraordinary performances as Firefly, including “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” by Michael Jackson, “Attention” by Charlie Puth, “Bad Girl” by Usher, and “Lost Without U” by Robin Thicke. She also emerged victorious during her week 2 Duel with Joe Buck’s Ram, in which she sang “God Is a Woman” by Ariana Grande.

Teyana won The Masked Singer season 7 with her performance of “Lost Without U,” pulling ahead of runner-up Hayley Orrantia and third place finisher Cheyenne Jackson.

Although there have been other Masked Singer mishaps through the years, including when season 7’s Duff Goldman lost his head as McTerrier and when season 7’s Dog the Bounty Hunter fell on stage during a performance as Armadillo, Teyana’s choking incident was one of the scariest. However, she persevered as Firefly, shining brightly, and went on to win the whole competition. Now, impressively, Teyana will add a Golden Globe Award to her trophy shelf.

The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
