One of James Gunn‘s favorite movies has an exciting future ahead.
A 2026 action thriller which Gunn praised as “one of the best” has earned a major new release, which will be happening in just five days. There have been a number of strong action movies that have been released this year so far, delivering a plethora of powerful stories on screens big and small. This includes Supergirl, part of the Gunn-led DCU, as well as other franchise films like Mortal Kombat II and Masters of the Universe. But there have also been numerous standalone titles from around the world.
One such movie is The Furious, an English-language action movie produced in Hong Kong and originally released in theaters on June 12, 2026. Directed by Japanese action filmmaker Kenji Tanigaki, the movie stars Xie Miao as Wang Wei, a mute everyman who battles a criminal empire after they kidnapped his daughter. He teams up with Joe Taslim’s Navin, a journalist who is looking for his wife, who was also taken. The Furious earned critical acclaim upon release, currently holding a Certified Fresh 98% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 150 critic reviews.
Now, The Furious is expanding its reach with a 4K Collector’s Edition, which will be released by Lionsgate on August 11, 2026. The release features a hand-drawn, comic-inspired cover of the protagonist fighting a group of gang members. The two-disc item also includes a number of special features, including “A Storm of Carnage: Creating The Furious,” and “Five-Man Brawl.” There are also deleted scenes, alongside the film’s theatrical trailer, which can be watched amongst the other bonus content the Collector’s Edition provides.
In addition to its critical success, The Furious was also a box office hit, earning $42 million against a $20 million budget. It’s already an award-winning action movie, too, having earned a Special Jury Award at the 58th Stiges Film Festival and Best Stunts at the 9th Astra Midseason Movie Awards. The movie has been favorably compared to other high-octane action films like The Raid, with the choreography and stunt work being some of the most standout elements of the movie.
It’s just one of many projects under Tanigaki’s belt that have earned recognition over the decades. The filmmaker began as an action choreographer, working closely with Donnie Yen on the TV show Fists of Fury. He went on to coordinate award-winning stunts for the live-action Rurouni Kenshin movie, 2018’s Hidden Man, Yen’s 2021 movie Raging Fire, and 2024’s Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. The Furious is just the latest of his many action-packed movies, and one that’s earned plenty of recognition thanks to its central selling point.
The movie’s 4K release gives fans a new way of experiencing the movie at home, alongside additional features that dive into its production. Since The Furious has earned high praise from Gunn and other filmmakers, it only makes sense for the movie to garner enough for such an important release. With the physical copies less than a week away from release, now is the time for fans to pre-order and secure the limited-edition discs.
