Across the board, The Punisher: One Last Kill really feels like a truly special MCU special, celebrating the entire legacy of Frank Castle in the MCU while also kicking off a new era for Jon Bernthal’s Punisher going forward. Additionally, One Last Kill also features some very cool Easter eggs, references, and cool ties calling back to the Netflix era of Marvel shows when Frank Castle debuted in Daredevil season 2 before receiving his own two-season Punisher series.
From returning locations and familiar faces to comic book nods and direct references to both prior and future Marvel projects, One Last Kill rewards longtime fans while also fleshing out Frank’s entire journey in the MCU thus far. With that in mind, here are the 14 biggest Easter eggs, MCU references, and Netflix nods we found in The Punisher: One Last Kill.
Punisher’s Murder Board
Despite relocating from his safehouse seen in both seasons of Daredevil: Born Again, Frank Castle still has a similar large murder board of targets and enemies on his wall…at least before he tears them all down at the beginning of One Last Kill, his mission to take out every criminal involved in his family’s murder now complete in the MCU.
Little Sicily
It’s revealed that Frank Castle has relocated to Little Sicily, explaining his absence in Daredevil: Born Again season 2. In the comics, Little Sicily is a New York neighborhood largely controlled by the Italian Gnucci Crime Family. As such, the same is revealed to be true in the MCU…at least before The Punisher came to town.
Gnucci’s Restaurant
Just like in the comics, Gnucci’s Restaurant is revealed to be a major location in Little Sicily, though one that’s since been abandoned in the wake of Punisher taking out the vast majority of the Gnucci Crime Family, the last ones in his war on those involved in his family’s deaths. Gnucci’s Restaurant was featured in 2000s Punisher #4 by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, a major hub for organized crime.
Curtis Hoyle
Haunted by his past, Frank Castle is confronted by the ghosts of his squad when he served as a Marine. This includes his good friend Curtis Hoyle, with actor Jason R. Moore reprising his role from Netflix’s Punisher series.
In the original series, Curtis became one of Frank’s few allies during his brutal crusade following the deaths of his family. While Curtis tried getting Frank to come to group therapy sessions, Curtis and Frank eventually parted ways after the death of Billy Russo, with Curtis no longer able to condone Frank’s violence and darkness.
New York Cup
Adding to the realism of the MCU, Frank is shown ordering a coffee, and his cup is a classic blue-and-white Greek Anthora cup with the motto, “We Are Happy to Serve You.” This same cup can be found in several real-life cafés and bodegas in New York.
In past MCU projects, this same cup has been seen in Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Hawkeye, Netflix’s Daredevil series, and more Marvel projects.
Castle Family Graves
Visiting the graves of his wife, son, and daughter, Frank returns to the cemetery first seen in Netflix’s Daredevil season 2, where The Punisher first debuted and clashed with Matt Murdock’s “Devil of Hell’s Kitchen”.
“One Batch, Two Batch, Penny & Dime”
Featured in flashbacks with the book and the rhyme said aloud by Frank Castle at the end of One Last Kill, “One Batch, Two Batch” comes from his daughter Lisa’s favorite book, which Frank was supposed to read the night his family was murdered.
Maria Castle
Frank’s flashbacks/nightmare also features new scenes with his wife, Maria Castle, with actress Kelli Barrett also reprising her role from the original Netflix shows (Daredevil and Punisher).
Central Park Carousel
Frank’s nightmare also features several shots of the carousel in Central Park, where Frank’s family was murdered. This was also where Frank first defeated Billy Russo and disfigured his face, resulting in his transformation into the classic Marvel villain Jigsaw in Netflix’s Punisher season 2.
Lisa Castle
Seeing his daughter Lisa right in front of him in the cemetery, the vision of Frank Castle’s daughter in The Punisher: One Last Kill is played by Addie Bernthal, Jon Bernthal’s real-life daughter.
