Some of the greatest American novelists of the 20th century have managed to stay relevant after all these years through timeless storytelling that transcends the era in which their books were originally published and also captures a unique moment in history. Literary staples like F. However, arguably the most important figure in American literature is none other than Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway’s work defined the entire Lost Generation of 20th-century writing, with his sparse prose, understated dialogue, unflinching examinations of war, love, masculinity, and mortality, and unforgettable characters influencing decades of writers since.

And now, as Hemingway’s seminal novel turns 100 years old this year, The Sun Also Rises is officially being given a massive overhaul in a brand-new centenarian anniversary edition release from Penguin Random House, available starting October 13.

First published by Charles Scribner’s Sons on October 22, 1926, The Sun Also Rises changed the landscape of American literature forever. Penguin’s 100th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of The Sun Also Rises promises to honor that legacy with a “richly illustrated, full-color, clothbound celebration of the novel” that features “illuminating commentary that brings its colorful world to vivid life.” The unique new 364-page edition will be available for roughly $40 USD and will release on October 13, 2026, in major retailers worldwide.

This new edition includes the authoritative corrected text from Library of America, as well as a new introduction from The New Yorker’s Adam Gopnik, and will feature nearly 150 incredible illustrations and photographs as well as over 200 marginal notes. Further, readers will get to experience the original opening chapters from Hemingway’s original typescript that F. Scott Fitzgerald famously urged the author to cut, as well as “a selection of letters from Hemingway to Maxwell Perkins, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and others that concern the composition, editing, and publication of The Sun Also Rises.”

The centenarian edition will also feature a “detailed chronology of Hemingway’s life and career,” and promises readers a fully overhauled and corrected text that has been edited to fix “numerous errors” and will “[restore] key changes” that were made to the author’s original punctuation, particularly the novel’s closing lines.

The aforementioned marginalia is penned by esteemed Hemingway scholar Robert W. Trogdon, providing original analysis and insight into The Sun Also Rises’ historical context, explanations of Hemingway’s use of the language of the period, the book’s various literary allusions, and contemporary references.

Hemingway’s distinct cast of expats “the setting of 1920s Paris and Spain, the San Fermin festival in Pamplona, and, of course, bullfighting, as well as the novel’s rich cultural afterlife, are brought vividly to life as never before” in this new definitive edition of arguably the greatest American novel of all time.
