One of the fan-favorite elements introduced in the Naruto franchise is the eye techniques, or “dojutsu,” which have evolved throughout the story from being incredible resources meant to enhance ninja skills to powers of divine nature that defy the laws of physics and possess unparalleled strength. But while each dojutsu has its own characteristics, some are clearly more extraordinary than others.
These ocular abilities are inherited by clans like the Hyuga and Uchiha, and they not only grant their users an alluring gaze but also give them access to exceptional powers, leading to advantages in combat and even devastating attacks. However, not all dojutsu possess the same level of power.

Senrigan
A dojutsu introduced in Boruto and currently a trademark of Eida, the Senrigan grants her the ability to observe any scene in the world by projecting her consciousness to anywhere in the present or past since her birth. While not completely omniscient, as Eida cannot comprehend everything she sees, it’s the most effective dojutsu for tactical support in Naruto.
Although Senrigan isn’t directly used for offense, it’s a top-tier clairvoyance ability that, if used correctly, can completely turn the tide of battle in Eida’s favor. Knowledge is a weapon, and it could be incredibly useful for understanding their opponent’s weaknesses and planning a strategy in advance. Therefore, if a strong character possessed Senrigan, it would hold enormous potential.

Byakugan
The Byakugan is a dojutsu inherited among the Hyuga clan that allows them to detect chakra points, grants them a wide field of vision, and increases their range to see at greater distances or through solid objects. While it’s one of the biggest ocular techniques in Naruto, the Byakugan alone cannot harm the enemy, unlike the Sharingan, which allows its user to use genjutsu.
That’s why mastering the Gentle Fist is essential to harnessing the Byakugan’s abilities. With techniques like the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, Byakugan users can deliver targeted strikes that disrupt their enemies’ chakra flow, rendering them unable to fight, or even lethal blows that can damage internal organs.

Sharingan
The Sharingan is one of the most distinctive dojutsu in the entire Naruto franchise, and it can only be awakened by members of the Uchiha clan. This kekkei genkai allows the user to distinguish chakra by its color and even see its flow, enabling them to fully grasp their opponent’s movements and anticipate or predict their actions during battle.
Therefore, the Sharingan is particularly effective in physical combat, as it allows the user to easily dodge enemy attacks and even replicate all basic jutsu and other abilities, depending on the user’s level. Furthermore, what makes the Sharingan such a terrifying dojutsu is that it can also use genjutsu to trap enemies in powerful illusions.
7
Jougan
The Jougan is the most controversial dojutsu in the Naruto universe, as it remains shrouded in mystery. In its few appearances, the Jougan allowed Boruto to perceive the chakra systems of others, granting him a significant combat advantage similar to that of the Byakugan. The Jougan is also deeply connected to otherworldly realms.
The Jougan appears to grant Boruto access to a sort of space-time ninjutsu, gaining the ability to sense and open portals to other dimensions. However, since Jougan has so far only been an addition to the anime, it’s unclear whether it’s a discarded dojutsu or if it will even appear in the manga, making it harder to determine the extent of its powers.

Kokugan
Isshiki Otsutsuki and Kawaki have a unique eye technique called Kokugan that allows them to shrink objects captured by their black eye to the point where they are no longer visible or to revert them to their original size. The most troublesome part is that it works on Isshiki himself, which means he can disappear from sight in an instant.
The Kokugan can also shrink ninjutsu to neutralize them, and it has a unique space-time ability called Daikokuten that gives the user their own fourth-dimensional pocket to store their possessions and even weapons and retrieve them at any moment, creating surprise attacks at incredible speeds. This versatility makes the Kokugan a more problematic dojutsu to deal with than even the Sharingan.
5
Mangekyo Sharingan
The Mangekyo Sharingan is an evolved and more complete form of the Sharingan. In addition to enhancing the powers of its base form, those who awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan can use strong techniques like a strong chakra body known as Susanoo and also gain unique abilities, one in each eye, which can be extremely overpowered.
Despite consuming a large amount of chakra and risking blindness if overused, the Mangekyo Sharingan offers something other dōjutsu lack: it can directly damage the opponent with the user’s special technique. These attacks can be overwhelming, as demonstrated by Kakashi being bedridden for days after being struck by Itachi’s Tsukuyomi.
4
Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan
The upgraded form of the Mangekyo Sharingan is obtained by fulfilling certain conditions. The Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan is the most powerful representation of the Uchiha clan’s Kekkei Genkai because it eliminates all the inherent risks of the dojutsu, such as the potential loss of vision, allowing its powers to be used without restriction.
3
Rinnegan
The Rinnegan is the final form of the Sharingan, requiring cells from the Senju clan for its activation, unlike the Mangekyo Sharingan, which can only need to be awakened by the Uchiha clan bloodline. The Rinnegan possesses the power of the Six Paths and can utilize six different abilities, ranging from summoning to resurrection and controlling the dead.
Being the natural evolution of the Sharingan and having six core abilities with almost godlike strength that are more versatile compared to the Uchiha’s techniques, the Rinnegan is considered the strongest dojutsu in itself.
2
Tenseigan
Used by Toneri in The Last: Naruto the Movie, the Tenseigan is only possible to obtain after transplanting the Byakugan from a Hyūga to an Otsutsuki. The Tenseigan is like the counterpart of the Rinnegan and Sharingan, being the ultimate form of the Byakugan. However, instead of just being comparable to the Rinnegan, the Tenseigan’s destructive power seems to defy common sense.
Toneri Otsutsuki’s abilities after obtaining the Tenseigan ranged from gravitational powers with which he projected chakra to remote control objects, as well as a chakra mode similar to Naruto Uzumaki’s with the Nine-Tails. However, his most powerful jutsu are the Ginrin Tensei Baku, which can generate a giant tornado, and the Kinrin Tensei Baku, which could even slice the moon in half.
1
Rinne-Sharingan
This ocular ability is a higher level of the Rinnegan. The Rinne Sharingan is the most powerful and rarest dojutsu in the Naruto franchise, possessed originally only by Kaguya Otsutsuki. As its name suggests, it combines the powers of Rinnegan and Sharingan, and those who awaken it will be able to control space-time ninjutsu such as teleporting through dimensions.
Its fearsome nature stems from the terrifying power wielded by the Infinite Tsukuyomi, a formidable planetary genjutsu capable of trapping humanity in an unconscious state of eternal sleep. Furthermore, as it encompasses the power of some of the strongest eye techniques in addition to the adaptability and explosive strength of the Six Paths chakra, the Rinne Sharingan is an all-around superior dojutsu.
