Very few superhero teams can claim a roster as powerful or recognizable as the Justice League. While its members regularly unite to protect the world from overwhelming threats, they have also found themselves fighting each other on numerous occasions. Such conflicts have emerged from opposing beliefs, personal struggles, outside manipulation, or other circumstances beyond their control.

These battles are particularly notable because they pit some of DC’s greatest champions against one another, often forcing them to confront abilities and tactics they have grown used to fighting alongside. These clashes have involved legendary figures like Superman, Batman, and many others, delivering some of the most compelling brawls in the team’s history.

Superman vs. Wonder Woman – Superman #211

Superman and Wonder Woman rarely find themselves on opposite sides of a conflict, making their clash in Superman #211 particularly memorable. During the For Tomorrow storyline, Diana confronted Clark inside the Fortress of Solitude after he planned to reactivate the technology behind the Vanishing, believing it could help recover those who disappeared.

Convinced this endeavor would kill him, Wonder Woman tried to stop him, leading the two heroes into an intense scuffle. Diana used a newly obtained magical sword capable of cutting Superman, while Clark responded with his signature strength. Their confrontation severely damaged the Fortress, forcing Diana to rescue Daniel Leone and Mr. Orr as Clark activated the device and vanished.

The Justice League vs. Fernus – JLA #86

The Justice League faced one of its most dangerous internal threats during the Trial by Fire storyline when Fernus, a terrifying Burning Martian personality, overtook Martian Manhunter. What began as a mysterious series of incidents soon placed the League directly against J’onn, whose unique and powerful abilities made him exceptionally difficult to contain.

Fernus defeated several League members with ease, forcing them to retreat and develop new ways to resist his attacks. Their struggle reached its climax in Korea, where Fernus fought Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the rest of the team after unleashing a nuclear strike. J’onn eventually reclaimed control and defeated Fernus, also leaving his vulnerability to fire forever changed.

Superman vs. Shazam – Kingdom Come #4

Superman and Captain Marvel rank among the most recognizable heroes in DC Comics, but Kingdom Come placed them in direct opposition during its apocalyptic climax. Billy Batson had been mentally controlled by Lex Luthor and used as a weapon against Superman, joining the battle at the Gulag and helping push the superhuman conflict toward catastrophe.

The two heroes traded powerful blows, with Captain Marvel’s magical lightning giving him a crucial edge over Superman. Clark eventually used the transformation against him, though, catching Billy as a lightning strike turned him human again. Superman then revealed the incoming nuclear bomb and left the decision to Billy, who overcame Luthor’s control and went on to intercept it.

The Original Justice League vs. The Rest – JLA #200

Few Justice League lineups are as famous as its seven founding members, who first united while battling the Appellaxians. Decades later, those same aliens returned in JLA #200 and manipulated the heroes into recovering their old meteors, while altering their memories so they no longer recognized the League members who had joined afterward.

This turned the anniversary issue into a team-wide clash between the original League and its newer roster. Firestorm battled Martian Manhunter, Aquaman fought Red Tornado, Superman faced Hawkman, and several others joined their own matchups. The founders emerged victorious, but the reassembled Appellaxians soon attacked everyone, forcing the entire League to reunite and stop them.

Wonder Woman vs. The Justice League – JLA: A League of One

In JLA: A League of One, Diana deliberately turned against Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter after an Oracle predicted the League would die defeating the dragon Drakul Karfang. Like her confrontation with Superman in Superman #211, this situation stemmed from the deep care she held for her teammates.

Determined to spare them, Wonder Woman secretly began removing them from the battle. She trapped Martian Manhunter in a lava-filled sphere, defeated Green Lantern and took his ring, hurled Aquaman into Charybdis, knocked out Flash, and subdued Batman before launching the League into space. Superman resisted her, but Diana eventually explained her plan, and he focused on rescuing the others.

Batman vs. The Justice League – Batman (2011) #35

Batman is a founding member of the Justice League, but in Batman #35, he found himself fighting several of his fellow heroes under unsettling circumstances. During the Endgame storyline, Wonder Woman suddenly attacked Bruce and revealed that the League had come to kill him, forcing Batman to activate Fenrir, a massive armored suit designed to survive confrontations with his teammates.

Batman managed to neutralize Wonder Woman, Flash, and Aquaman using carefully prepared countermeasures before Superman arrived and overwhelmed the armor. The fight continued across Gotham, with Bruce using red-sun technology to weaken Clark before Superman tore the suit apart. Batman then spat kryptonite-laced gum into Superman’s eye, dropping him into the water and marking the end of the fight.

Batman vs. Superman – Batman #612

Batman and Superman are DC Comics’ premier heroes, though many of their encounters have been less than friendly. Batman #612 features one such moment, where Poison Ivy takes control of Superman and commands him to kill Batman. Bruce retreats through Metropolis’ lead-lined sewer system with Catwoman, using the underground network to prepare for an unavoidable confrontation.

The battle begins when Superman smashes into the tunnels, forcing Batman to rely on a Kryptonite ring and carefully timed attacks to keep the Kryptonian at bay. Bruce later draws him toward the Daily Planet, where Catwoman drops Lois Lane from a rooftop. Seeing Lois in danger breaks Ivy’s hold, and Superman saves her, joining Batman in capturing Ivy.

Batman vs. Wonder Woman – Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia

One of Batman and Wonder Woman’s most unusual confrontations occurred in Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia, with both believing they served noble causes. During the story, Diana accepted Danielle Wellys as her supplicant through an ancient Greek ritual that required her to provide protection, unaware that Batman was pursuing the young woman for multiple murders.

Batman tracked Danielle to the Themysciran Embassy and demanded that Diana surrender her, but the Hiketeia bound her to defend the girl. The two heroes clashed when Bruce didn’t back down, and Diana overpowered him. Danielle later admitted to the crimes before fleeing, leading to another confrontation between the two that Wonder Woman also won.

Superman vs. Wonder Woman – Wonder Woman #219

In another case of outside manipulation influencing battles between the Justice League’s strongest figures, Wonder Woman #219 saw the Princess of Themyscira face off against a brainwashed Superman. Maxwell Lord had tampered with Superman’s mind, making him believe Diana was Doomsday and that she had killed Lois. Convinced he was stopping a deadly threat, Clark attacked Diana with overwhelming force.

Superman carried Wonder Woman into space and attempted to throw her into the sun. Diana escaped his grasp and endured a devastating blow that sent her back to Earth, continuing to fight and incapacitating him long enough that she could flee. She eventually reached Lord, trapped him with her Lasso, and killed him after learning his death could free Superman.

Batman vs. Superman – The Dark Knight Returns #4

The Dark Knight Returns presented a future where Batman’s methods had brought him back into conflict with the authorities, while Superman had become their most powerful enforcer. This put two legendary Justice League heroes on opposite sides when the government sent Clark to stop Bruce, and the pair agreed to settle the dispute personally in Crime Alley.

Batman entered the confrontation in an armored exoframe, equipped with an arsenal specifically prepared for Superman. His weapons only slowed Clark down until Oliver Queen fired a Kryptonite-tipped arrow that weakened him enough for Bruce to land several blows. Batman appeared to perish moments after from a heart attack, though his death was later revealed as an elaborate deception.
