Prime Video’s Invincible features characters with extraordinary superpowers that most of us wish we had. While some super abilities like flight and strength are seen in various superhero TV shows and movies, those shown in Invincible are fascinating because they are rarely one-dimensional.

The series often expands what a superpower can be. Some abilities are based on physical dominance, such as durability, regeneration, and the ability to survive in the vacuum of space. Others operate on a larger scale, including multiverse travel, matter manipulation, and advanced intelligence.

As cool as some of these superpowers are, they sometimes come at a cost. Monster Girl’s ability to turn into a monster, for instance, makes her age backwards. Other superpowers like Shrinking Rae’s ability to become a minuscule version of herself are underwhelming.

Invincible doesn’t necessarily include super abilities we haven’t already seen before. In fact, some feel Aquarus’ powers seem like they’ve been copied and pasted from a DC comic book. Nevertheless, the series has redefined what superpowered heroes and villains can do with their gifts.

Armor Physiology

Character: Titan

Titan’s ability to transform his body into armor is one of the coolest powers in Invincible. Because the anti-hero’s armor is literally part of him, it gives him an upper hand in a fight as it’s a natural defense against attacks. What makes armor physiology even more interesting is that it combines strength, durability, and adaptability.

An armored body allows anyone to survive hits that would destroy normal humans, thus making them extremely dangerous in combat. Unlike the Fantastic Four’s Ben Grimm, whose armored body looks like an ugly rock, Titan’s actually looks cool. Invincible also did another intriguing thing with armored physiology: instead of Titan walking around in that form, he can simply cover himself in stone when he needs to.

Immortality

Character: The Immortal

When one thinks of immortality, supernatural creatures like vampires immediately come to mind. Invincible, however, did something special with this ability. One of the show’s most powerful characters and the leader of the Guardians of the Globe, The Immortal, is, well, immortal, but that’s just the least of his powers. He can also fly, has super strength, and super speed.

Immortality may not seem cool because the idea of living forever is tedious and, more often than not, depressing. However, there are some perks to this superpower. When one has lived for centuries and seen several civilizations rise and fall, they at least have learned a thing or two about life and combat, as proven by The Immortal. Being immortal also means not succumbing to some aspects of being human, like aging or sickness.

Rapid Regeneration

Characters: Viltrumites, Allen the Alien, and The Immortal

Rapid regeneration is one of the most impressive powers in Invincible because it completely changes the rules of combat. Characters with healing abilities can survive injuries that would instantly kill anyone else. Invincible’s fights are often brutal and extremely violent, so regeneration makes battles feel even more intense because characters can continue fighting after suffering devastating damage.

When Omni-Man’s spine was broken by Lucan, he survived the attack due to rapid regeneration. The Immortal also lived after Omni-Man tore him to pieces because of this ability. In Invincible, rapid regeneration creates a different kind of fighter as they often take risks no one else can, and they are able to quickly recover from fatal mistakes.

Shapeshifting

Character: Shapesmith

When Shapesmith was introduced in Invincible season 2, he immediately became the weirdest character in the show — which is saying a lot given that this is the same series that includes the Lizard League. Weird tendencies aside, Shapesmith’s ability to change into anyone and anything he wants is pretty handy.

Shapeshifting is an incredibly versatile ability. A shapeshifter is not limited to a single fighting style or role. They can transform into different forms to adapt to almost any situation. In combat, they could alter their body to become stronger, faster, or more durable. Beyond fighting, shapeshifting is one of the most powerful abilities for stealth and deception. A character who can change their appearance can infiltrate enemy organizations, disguise themselves as anyone, or gather information without being detected.

Dragon Transformation

Character: Mister Liu

Invincible is filled with characters who gain their abilities in various ways. Some, like Omni-Man, are aliens, while others, like Robot, created their powers. Because the ability to turn into a dragon doesn’t fall into any of these categories, it makes Mister Liu’s power feel almost mystical. As a human, Mister Liu is an old man who looks like a gust of wind can blow him away, but it’s his cruel streak that makes his dragon transformation even more terrifying.

Dragons have been symbols of power, wisdom, and destruction across countless cultures, and Invincible uses that imagery to make Mister Liu’s power feel extraordinary. In fact, the kind of super strength that Mister Liu’s Dragon form holds can rival even that of the Viltrumites, which is why Omni-Man and Invincible had a hard time defeating him.

Duplication

Characters: Dupli-Kate and Multi-Paul

Duplication is an underrated ability, as it doesn’t seem that special. However, it has several advantages. For instance, a duplicate user can effectively multiply their abilities. Instead of one person fighting, working, or thinking, several versions can operate simultaneously. A duplicate can create a small army or have multiple versions attacking an opponent at once, which can be pretty useful.

Dupli-Kate had one of the best ideas in Invincible when she stashed one version of herself to ensure that not all of her duplicates were erased from the face of the Earth. Her brother, Multi-Paul, also showed just how useful the ability to have many versions of yourself is when he attacked Rex and came out on top.

Breathing In Space

Characters: The Viltrumites, Allen the Alien, and The Immortal

Throughout Invincible’s four seasons, the Viltrumites have proved to be an unstoppable force. They have several abilities, ranging from rapid regeneration to invulnerability. While all these would be great powers to have, the coolest ability is undoubtedly being able to breathe in space, especially because space is lethal for humans.

The vacuum, lack of oxygen, and extreme temperatures make it completely uninhabitable. But the Viltrumites, Allen the Alien, and The Immortal operate in space as effortlessly as humans walk on Earth. Being able to breathe in space would mean not needing a spacesuit, oxygen tank, or spacecraft. Granted, it’s not a kind of superpower that gives an upper hand in combat, but exploring alien worlds, drifting between planets, and flying past stars is still cool.

Super-Intelligence & Tactical Genius

Characters: The Mauler Twins, D.A. Sinclair, Angstrom Levy, & Robot

Invincible isn’t shy about depicting brutal violence and bloody fights, but some of the show’s best scenes are those featuring characters showing their intelligence and tactical genius. The Mauler Twins, for instance, are always able to make a clone because of their intelligence. D.A. Sinclair, though horrible, uses his brilliance to create the ReAnimen.

With superintelligence, one can analyze any situation instantly, identify weaknesses, and create near-perfect plans under pressure. It’s also one of the most versatile powers in Invincible because it can be used in various situations from technology to combat. In many ways, super intelligence is the ultimate equalizer because it allows anyone to win battles without even needing to fight.

Multiverse Hopping

Character: Angstrom Levy

Invincible season 2’s main villain, Angstrom Levy’s ability to hop through multiple dimensions initially seems like a cool party trick until he shows what his power can actually do when he and Invincible get into a fight. Because Levy was able to move between universes, he possessed unlimited knowledge of both people and the world.

Multiverse hopping operates on a whole different level. A character who can access different worlds gets to experience them differently. For instance, they can explore worlds where events turned out differently, where heroes became villains, or where entire civilizations evolve in completely unexpected ways, like how the dinosaurs in Invincible season 2 weren’t extinct.

Matter Manipulation

Character: Atom Eve

So far in Invincible, the Viltrumites have been put on a pedestal as the show’s most powerful characters due to the number of abilities they have. However, it could be argued that Atom Eve’s superpower, her ability to manipulate matter, is probably the superhero series’ most useful power. Matter manipulation allows a character to control the very building blocks of reality itself, which is nothing to sneeze at.

What makes matter manipulation so incredible is that it can do almost anything. Atom Eve, for instance, can create objects out of nothing, reshape environments instantly, repair damage or rebuild structures, and transform one material into another. In fights, matter manipulation blends defense and offense. Atom Eve can build shields in an instant, but she can also create weapons on demand. So while Invincible‘s most powerful characters so far are Viltrumites, Atom Eve shouldn’t be counted out.
