Like other media, in anime, this trope can be found across a broad range of genres, speaking to its popularity and universal appeal. Many times it appears in the form of rivalry, but it can also come from estranged relationships and encounters, offering varied narrative possibilities. Some of the best examples come from places one may not expect, while others are the centerpiece of the story, driving the series’ popularity and success.

Shoko Nishimiya and Shoya Ishida (A Silent Voice)

Shoko Nishimiya and Shoya Ishida’s initial relationship was harmful and damaging. As children in elementary school, Shoya targets Shoko, a deaf girl in his class, escalating to unintended physical harm when he pulls her equipment out of her ear. This event later forced Shoko to transfer schools, leaving Shoya to then become socially ostracized by his class in return and damaging his own mental health.
