Why The Weekly Boss System Needs An Overhaul

Genshin Impact is in dire need of a weekly boss update, something that has long been required, though its absence is being felt even more now, five years into the RPG. The popular title developed by HoYoverse is about to celebrate its fifth anniversary following its launch in 2020, but there are still some lingering issues. One example is the lack of diversity in Genshin Impact, which was the theme of a petition.

Aside from this continuous design issue, there are also problems that pertain to gameplay. This includes the daily Resin cap and the inability to store unused Resin, which is possible in HoYoverse’s Honkai: Star Rail, for example. Another issue is the daily farming restrictions in Genshin Impact, which have been somewhat addressed with new mechanics in Version 6.0, but haven’t been fully resolved.

Genshin Impact Desperately Needs A Weekly Boss Update

Trounce Domains Have Heavy Limitations

Genshin Impact’s Lord of Eroded Primal Fire Boss wields two swords.

However, one of the most annoying issues, which does have an easy fix, is how weekly boss challenges can be faced and their respective materials are obtained. Currently, each Trounce Domain can be challenged once, living up to the weekly boss title. Each of these Trounce Domains has a chance to drop three different weekly boss materials used in Talent-leveling, but there is no guarantee that you’ll get what you need.

As such, if you need a material from the Knave boss fight in Genshin Impact, you may challenge her Trounce Domain once per week, but you may not get the exact item you’re looking for. This will force you to wait until next week to challenge her again. Furthermore, you may not get what you need, once again, in the following week.

One of the solutions that HoYoverse has to offer is to use the other materials dropped by the same boss, in addition to a Dream Solvent, and craft a copy of what you need at an Alchemy Table in Genshin Impact. However, once again, there is a problem: Dream Solvent is a fairly uncommon drop from Trounce Domains, so there is no guarantee you’ll get one, even if you run all the available weekly boss challenges.

This system was already bad at the time of its launch, but it has become notoriously worse as the game expands, gets new characters, and more bosses are added. It’s about time that HoYoverse revisits the very structure of the weekly boss fights in Genshin Impact, as this is having bad consequences for players.

Why Genshin Impact’s Weekly Boss System Is Such A Problem

It Can Be Tiresome To Upgrade Your Characters Before Actually Enjoying The Game

This puts a damper on how quickly you upgrade your characters, as you may spend weeks, if not months, trying to farm the proper materials and never really getting them. The biggest issue with this system is the three different material drop possibilities, combined with the fact that you can only face the same activity once per week, and the poorly developed Resin system that forces you to pick where to spend your farming resources.

Coming back strong into the game with the Nod-Krai update and having obtained Lauma, it became even more evident how tiresome it can become. It can already take me a few days to fully upgrade Lauma, for example, since there is a Local Specialty respawn time that forces you to log in after a couple of days. Even so, that is extremely doable since I have the guarantee that I’ll obtain what I need.

The same can be said about the world boss materials, which are a guaranteed drop for Lauma’s Ascension – even if the number of materials is uncertain, I know I’ll get precisely what I want. However, once I get to upgrading her Talents to fully optimize Lauma’s build in Genshin Impact, things get way too rough.

I already have to wait for the proper days to farm the proper Talent books for the character – surely, HoYoverse has cut down this limitation during the first week that the character is available following their debut, but it’s still a problem considering how many of the materials are needed and how much Resin I have available every day. Even so, these are guaranteed drops.

The randomness of the weekly boss material drops, however, is what helps ruin it all. With every weekly reset, I’m happy about the prospect of getting the required materials and taking Lauma’s Talents to the next level, only to have my hopes shattered by the ridiculous drop RNG and the inability to challenge the activity once more.

I’ve long been having issues with how much grind Genshin Impact requires, but coming back with so much hope for the new content, only to see nothing’s changed too much, leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I’ve ignored a lot of the game’s issues for quite some time, but I believe I may finally be falling out of love with it, and this type of limitation is one of the reasons why.

Genshin Impact’s Weekly Bosses Could Learn From Honkai: Star Rail

The Turn-Based RPG Offers Better Farming Options From Weekly Bosses

This is worsened by the fact that HoYoverse has a great solution in its hands. In Honkai: Star Rail, you can’t face all the weekly bosses. Instead, you have a pool that limits the number of times that weekly bosses can be faced. However, you can face the same boss three times. If you’re farming for a certain character, you’ll only face the boss that drops the materials that they need.

Furthermore, weekly bosses only have one material drop, and there’s a guaranteed number of materials dropped per run. This makes you go into these challenges knowing exactly what and how much you’ll get. At this point in Genshin Impact, I believe that an overhaul like this could help the game significantly.

With it, HoYoverse could offer players access to five Trounce Domains per week, for example, and you could spend all five challenges on the same boss. Additionally, because Genshin Impact weekly bosses have more material drop possibilities, it could offer an option for players to select which of the three materials they want improved drop rates for, for example.

There are multiple ways of optimizing farming and making the game more pleasant for players. Instead of trying to force players to log in to farm on specific days and week after week, it’d be best if you could fully upgrade your characters in a reasonable time frame and feel more willing to actually play for the sake of playing Genshin Impact – something that HoYoverse really needs to take into consideration.
