Euron Greyjoy is one of the most divisive Game of Thrones characters, and House of the Dragon’s opportunity to redeem him won’t be in season 3. Among the numerous problems of Game of Thrones season 8 was Euron, a beloved book antagonist who was shrunk down to a cartoonish archetype, defying the show’s reputation for three-dimensional characters.
House of the Dragon season 3 is well underway, with the series entering post-production for the final stretch, building toward a June 2026 release date. There are many new actors and characters joining the epic new season, as the Dance of the Dragons explodes across Westeros like never before.
Dalton Greyjoy Hasn’t Been Cast For House Of The Dragon Season 3
Among the new characters being added to House of the Dragon season 3, I was hoping to hear something about Dalton Greyjoy. Dalton is the Lord of the Iron Islands during the Dance, and he’s one of the bloodiest, most violent characters George R.R. Martin has written. That’s a difficult description to earn in the ever-violent A Song of Ice & Fire novel universe, but you don’t earn the title “the Red Kraken” for nothing.
With House of the Dragon season 3’s filming likely finished or almost completed, it’s highly unlikely we’re going to see Dalton in season 3, despite his character playing a prevalent role in the Dance in Fire & Blood. He enters the war with an unexpected attack on the Westerlands, which would likely occur around the start of season 3 in the show’s timeline, if it were to happen.
Dalton Greyjoy Was Mentioned In House Of The Dragon Season 2
During House of the Dragon season 2’s Green small council meetings, the idea of an alliance with Dalton Greyjoy was thrown around. The TV series has established that this character exists, but that doesn’t mean he’ll actually appear at any point down the line. The show is already behind on introducing characters, with yet another Targaryen entering the fold this upcoming season.
Unfortunately, Dalton Greyjoy’s off-screen mention and the fact that much of his place in the Dance occurs away from House of the Dragon’s main characters imply that he could continue to be an off-screen entity. I wouldn’t be surprised if season 3 mentions Greyjoy raids on Lannisport, or even shows some glimpses of the attacks, but it likely won’t introduce his character.
Will Dalton Greyjoy Appear In House Of The Dragon Season 4?
It’s hard to say what House of the Dragon’s future holds, but I wouldn’t count on it. Dalton Greyjoy aids Rhaenyra’s side in the books, but his actions are essentially gruesome war crimes that paint Rhaenyra as a villain. Given how skewed the series is toward Rhaenyra and the Blacks, it’s unlikely that it would portray this upfront.
With only sixteen episodes of House of the Dragon left, the show is already running out of time and has numerous battles to cover ahead. There likely won’t be much time for additional factors like Dalton Greyjoy, which is disappointing, especially given how much the Greyjoys were botched in Game of Thrones.
