Marvel's Wolverine Hints at Days of Future Past Storyline

Marvel’s Wolverine was the biggest part of September 2025’s PlayStation State of Play, finally giving fans a new look at the upcoming superhero action title after almost four years of relative silence. Insomniac’s pulse-pounding trailer was filled with brutal action and classic comic book characters, with Logan facing off against the deadly Omega Red and Mystique lurking in the shadows.

One of the best moments comes at the very end of the Marvel’s Wolverine trailer, when Logan finds himself standing before a towering Sentinel robot. These mutant-hunting machines have appeared in multiple Marvel-based video games in the past, but their confirmed presence in Marvel’s Wolverine could be a sinister omen for the future of Insomniac’s superhero universe.

Sentinels Rule The Future In This Classic Comic Tale

The most famous storyline to feature Sentinels is undoubtedly 1981’s Days of Future Past, which depicted the future of the Marvel universe as a nightmarish dystopia where mutants and non-mutants alike are hunted and enslaved. This dark tale has been adapted in numerous media, including X-Men: The Animated Series and the 2014 X-Men: Days of Future Past movie.

In most versions, the Sentinels’ apocalyptic reign is triggered by Mystique, whose assassination of a major anti-mutant figure unwittingly paves the way for the rise of the machines. Sure enough, both Mystique and the Sentinels are a part of Marvel’s Wolverine, and this could be a very bad sign for the future of mutants in the Insomniac Marvel continuity.

Insomniac’s 2023 Leak Hinted At A Title Starring Marvel’s Merry Mutants

In late 2023, Insomniac fell victim to a massive data breach that unearthed some of the developer’s future plans. One of these leaked projects was an X-Men game, which presumably would be set up by Marvel’s Wolverine. There is currently no word about this project still being in development, but it could draw influence from Days of Future Past.

Most adaptations of Days of Future Past see one of the future survivors (Kitty Pryde in the comics, Wolverine in the movie) travel back in time to prevent the assassination that led to the Sentinels taking control, and this present-day storyline would make for a gripping narrative in Insomniac’s rumored X-Men game.

Previous Insomniac Marvel games have set up future Marvel video games in post-credits scenes, and the one for Marvel’s Wolverine could show Mystique successfully pulling off her fateful hit. Perhaps this is her primary objective in Marvel’s Wolverine, but gamers won’t know for sure what the future holds until the game launches in the fall of 2026.
