Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Gen V season 2, episode 5, “The Kids Are Not Alright.”Gen V star Jaz Sinclair explains why Marie Moreau is embracing the darker side of her character in season 2. Since Marie’s return to Godolkin University, Dean Cipher (Hamish Linklater) has been fixated on her reaching the full potential of her blood powers. Cipher even believes that she could become more powerful than Homelander (Antony Starr).
Gen V season 2, episode 5 sees Marie starting to believe this to a certain extent. Earlier in the episode, Marie admits to her friends that she felt stronger than ever before when she used her powers to levitate Jordan Li (Derek Luh/London Thor) during their fight, and Marie felt as though she could have destroyed the whole arena.
While speaking with TheWrap, Sinclair admits that there is a part of Marie that craves the idea of being powerful, even if she is skeptical of Cipher’s narrative about her being some kind of “chosen one.” Check out her comments below:
We definitely saw the underbelly of that this season. It was always kind of like, I really want to be powerful. I really want to be in The Seven, which is— everybody wants that. Most of the season, she’s like, “Miss me with the I’m the chosen one” narrative.
Sinclair also reflects on Cipher’s insistence that she can become more powerful than Homelander. She says that this idea is getting into Marie’s head after she hears it from multiple individuals, and she enjoys how it shows a different and more flawed side of Marie.
That’s the moment when [Marie’s] like, “I heard it from more than one person, so then it must be true,” and definitely let it get to her head.
[For me] as an actor, I loved that s***. I love that she’s flawed. I love that she makes bad choices. I love that she’s clumsy and awkward. I loved getting possessed by Godolkin, like any time I get to show a different aspect of Marie, it’s really fun.
What This Means For Gen V & The Boys
Marie is an incredibly heroic and selfless individual, but Sinclair does confirm that part of her is enamored by the idea that she could become more powerful than Homelander. It is a difficult idea for anyone to resist, especially with the way Cipher is pushing it and considering how Marie’s powers have already grown this season.
Marie’s latest power upgrade hints that she could become the most powerful supe yet. She brings her sister, Annabeth (Keeya King), back to life, even after Annabeth’s neck was cut open, and after she bled to death. No supe has ever been shown doing this before, not even Homelander, which puts Marie in a class of her own.
This may not even be the peak of her abilities, with another possibility being that she could remove Compound V from a supe’s blood. She could potentially do this to Homelander, thereby making him an ordinary human in The Boys season 5.
The danger is that Marie could lose her way if she becomes too powerful and obsessed with the idea of defeating Homelander. What sets her apart from other Homelander and many other supes is her compassion and need to do the right thing, and she would be fundamentally changed if those values were compromised.
Beyond Marie, Sinclair’s reference to “getting possessed by Godolkin” points to one dark Cipher theory being true, which is that the decrepit man in the hyperbaric chamber is Thomas Godolkin (Ethan Slater) and he is the one actually controlling Cipher and those Cipher possesses.
The idea of Marie’s powers being superior to Homelander is compelling, especially after the way she saved Annabeth’s life. Marie going down a darker path is also an enticing possibility, particularly after being a character whose moral compass has not wavered yet.
While unparalleled power and Cipher’s influence comes with temptation, Marie’s actions so far suggest that she will not ultimately stray from the right path in Gen V or The Boys, even if she does make “bad choices” sometimes.
