IND vs WI: Ravindra Jadeja nearly matches MS Dhoni’s 19-year-old record with brutal assault against Jomel Warrican in the 1st Test

India seized absolute control of the first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad, concluding Day 2 at a formidable 448/5, securing a massive 286-run lead. The day was defined by a stunning display of batting power, featuring centuries from KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, and an unbeaten ton from Ravindra Jadeja (104 not out).

It was during this sensational innings that Jadeja etched his name into a specific and elite record book by smashing five sixes off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican.

The Ahmedabad assault: A hat-trick of centuries

Day 2 became a run-fest for the home side. After opener Rahul set the foundation with his composed century, wicket-keeper batter Jurel struck a magnificent maiden Test century, forming a game-breaking partnership with Jadeja.

As the day progressed, Jadeja, playing in his quintessential attacking style, accelerated the scoring dramatically. Finishing the day unbeaten on 104, his six-hitting barrage against Warrican was a highlight of the late session. Jadeja’s five towering maximums off the same bowler demonstrated a clear strategy to dominate the opposition’s primary spin threat, propelling India past the 400-run mark and consolidating an unassailable position in the match. The partnership between Jurel and Jadeja was critical in exhausting the West Indian attack, culminating in India’s imposing score of 448/5 at stumps.

Ravindra Jadeja comes close to MS Dhoni’s 19-year-old record in Tests

Meanwhile, Jadeja’s feat of smashing five sixes off Warrican now stands as the joint second-most sixes hit by an Indian batter against a single opposition bowler in a Test innings, ranking just behind MS Dhoni’s historic benchmark. The only recorded instance surpassing Jadeja’s five sixes is held by Dhoni. During the first Test at St John’s, Antigua, in 2006, Dhoni, then a burgeoning star, launched an extraordinary assault on West Indian chinaman bowler Dave Mohammad, striking six sixes en route to a blistering 69 from just 52 balls.
