Chapter 1 of Deltarune features a secret boss that you might have missed on your first playthrough. While Toby Fox, the developer behind both Undertale and Deltarune, is working on releasing more Chapters, you may not have discovered every secret within the chapters that already exist. One of these secrets is Jevil, who is one of the game’s most difficult challenges in its earliest story section.
While you wait for future Chapters of Deltarune, you can seek out and battle Jevil alongside the other secret bosses in each new Dark World. But before you can fight Jevil, you’ll have to find him. Jevil can be found hiding within the Castle, the final location of Chapter 1, and you’ll need multiple keys to unlock the door to Jevil after your party is prepared enough to fight him.
How to Unlock The Secret Boss In Deltarune Chapter 1
Gathering The Broken Keys To Free Jevil
After clearing out the Castle Dungeon, walk past the shop and take the elevator to the first floor. Head down and to the right to find another elevator with the floor “????” and walk downstairs. After getting out of the elevator, follow the path to spot a locked gate door. By opening the door here, you’ll be able to find Jevil in their boss room.

After Catching Up On Deltarune, I’m Convinced I Know What Will Happen In Chapter 5
Chapters Three and Four of Deltarune were recently released, and I’m sure one character is going to play a much larger role in the following story.
Interacting with the door while it’s locked will have Jevil speak to your party, telling you that a single key is needed to unlock the path to Jevil. Similar to other secret bosses in Deltarune, you need to complete multiple steps to acquire this key, which has been broken into three different pieces.
The table below outlines how to find every piece of the key, including who you need to talk to and which locations to revisit:
Jevil Key Piece |
How To Find |
---|---|
Key Piece #1 |
Speak to Seam, the Shopkeeper, found at the field in the shop. In dialogue with this NPC, choose the “Strange Prisoner” dialogue option. This will give you the Broken Key item. |
Key Piece #2 |
Fast-travel to the Bake Sale and move to the left. Go past the area where two Bloxers are and keep moving to find a room with the black and white dancers that block the path ahead. Take the path south and continue until it seems like Kris in Deltarune is walking on air. Here, keep going and follow a secret path until you spot Rabbicks to battle. The Key Piece is at the end of this path past the enemies. |
Key Piece #3 |
Go to the Field and head right until you reach the puzzle from earlier in the game. Set the combination of the puzzle to Diamond, Heart, Clover, and Spade, to unlock a mechanism that gives you the last Key Piece. |
Once you have every piece, all you need to do is fix the Broken Key. To fix the key, you will need to go back to the Bake Sale. Take the path to the north to find Smith Malius, who will notice the broken key pieces in your inventory and offer to fix them.
There will be multiple hints given to you by the game once you get the Broken Key, the first piece needed to access Jevil’s prison. These should help lead you toward the other broken pieces, but try to avoid too many enemies to prevent the process from taking too long.
With the fixed key, you’re finally ready to take on Jevil. Before you run into battle, make sure to prepare by stopping by the shop to buy healing items and prepare for the fight. Head back to the elevator with the question marks and approach the gate to start the battle now that you have found Deltarune’s secret boss.
How to Defeat The Secret Boss In Deltarune Chapter 1
Fast Projectiles and High Defense Stats
As with most Undertale and Deltarune fights, you have two approaches to this encounter: the option to go passive or violent. The choice is up to you, depending on what kind of run you’re doing. Either way, this is the most difficult battle in Deltarune Chapter 1, which means that you’ll need to practice reading Jevil’s moveset and get comfortable dodging his attacks.
I suggest going into this battle with a fair number of consumables to keep the entire party healed, as several of Jevil’s attacks are hard to avoid and can take down an unprepared party member. Additionally, having the party fairly rounded out with solid Defense stats across the board will help you withstand a hit or two and keep going.
Fortunately, most of Jevil’s attacks have text cues, making it easier to determine which move he will do. The table below explains what happens when Jevil uses a particular piece of dialogue and what you might be able to do to dodge it. It will take some patience to get used to these moves, so don’t be discouraged if it takes a few tries. These attacks play out in phases, starting in a specific order before becoming random the longer Jevil spends on a phase.
Dialogue |
What Jevil Does & How To Counter |
---|---|
“Catch me if you can.” |
Jevil will teleport, appearing at various sides of the screen and tossing out spades. They are pretty fast, so be ready to move and get into the rhythm of their attack pattern timing to dodge them. |
“Having fun yet, join the club.” |
Clubs will appear from both the left and right sides of the screen. They fly by fairly quickly, so be careful when they appear. |
“Let’s make the Devilsknife.” |
The Devil’s Knife will appear in a square. You can dodge it by heading into the middle and moving back and forth between the edge of the screen and the center. |
“Let’s ride the carousel game.” |
Horses will ride diagonally across the screen. Just avoid the corners for this move. |
“My hearts go out to all the sinners.” |
Four hearts will sweep across the screen, spinning towards you. Two pairs of hearts will attack the players separately. Wait and move once they approach. |
“Shall we play around?” |
Jevil will fire spades that spiral towards you. This is a big attack, so make sure to dodge it far away to avoid getting hit. |
Once you get through all of these moves, Jevil will begin to go into his desperation mode. During this time, all the attacks from above will be used simultaneously and at different speeds. The combat box will also be removed as knives rain from the top of the screen. This is the sign that the battle will soon come to a close. This also allows you to move around outside the play area, making it easier to dodge the knives.
Defeating Jevil or causing him to give up will reward you with different items based on the actions you took. No matter how you finish the encounter, Jevil will predict doom on the party and disappear.
Note that you do not need to clear out the rest of the chapter to attempt this fight. It becomes available at any point after making it to the Castle, so you can tackle Jevil anytime that you want over the course of your run. With the recent release of Chapters 3 and 4, you can also jump back into Chapter 1 to take on Jevil if you missed it during your initial playthrough, along with any other missed content from earlier parts of the story.
All Rewards For Defeating Jevil
Gain A Powerful Item For Battle Based On Your Actions
Depending on how you approach the Jevil fight, the reward will be slightly different. Listed below are each of the rewards you get from beating Jevil, including which one you get based on which actions you took:
Jevil Reward |
Route Action |
Item Stats & Effects |
---|---|---|
Jevilstail |
Actions Only (Pascifist) |
+2 AT, +2 DF, +2 Magic |
Devilsknife |
Battle Only (Violence) |
+5 AT, +4 Magic, Buster TP Down |
The rewards for completing this challenge might be small, but they can be carried over into Chapter 2 and beyond. For some characters, these items are their best equipment for the first couple Chapters, until you start finding better gear later.

I’m Pretty Sure I Know Who The Roaring Knight Is In Deltarune
The true identity of the Roaring Knight is a hot discussion among Delatune fans, but I think most of the evidence points to one particular figure.
Defeating Jevil also rewards you with a Shadow Crystal. This mysterious item is one of the rarest objects in the game, appearing only on the secret bosses of each Chapter, like Spamton NEO in Chapter 2 and Gerson in Chapter 4. You can bring the crystal to Seam, who will comment that Shadow Crystals can be found on powerful beings and that even though it’s invisible, it still casts a shadow.
Luckily, Deltarune is available now on most modern consoles, which means you can try different runs on different consoles without having multiple accounts. However, be prepared for your ending to suffer if you choose the more violent route, regardless of when the next chapters come out. Until then, keep attempting to beat Jevil until you defeat him in Deltarune.
