The High Potential season 2 premiere has already started moving the show in a very important direction, and it’ll change Morgan’s role for the better. High Potential was an instant hit when it first aired on ABC in 2024. With comparisons to shows like Psych and Veronica Mars, High Potential has solidified itself as a must-watch crime procedural.
The High Potential season 2 trailer promised a new antagonist and that Morgan’s job may be in jeopardy, indicating a suspenseful and drama-filled new season. While the season premiere didn’t introduce this new character, it did continue on from High Potential season 1’s multiple cliffhangers, making good on the promises from the previous season.
In addition to continuing both the Game Maker and Roman plot lines, High Potential season 2 has introduced a new dynamic between Morgan and the LAPD detectives. This change could prove to be beneficial, making Morgan an even stronger crime solver.
The Detectives Are Pushing Back On Morgan’s Theories
In the High Potential season 2 premiere, the LAPD detectives pushed back on Morgan’s Game Maker theories multiple times. Morgan was instantly convinced that the villain was responsible for a recently missing woman, although the rest of the detectives weren’t so sure. Morgan immediately wanted to treat the cases as related, even though she didn’t have much evidence.
Morgan may be incredibly smart and definitely has a solid track record of solving the precinct’s crimes, but at the end of the day, she isn’t a trained detective, and she’s only been doing this work for a few months. These highly experienced detectives should push back on Morgan when her theories aren’t supported by the proper evidence.
Morgan Can’t Always Be Right
Of course, High Potential is a show about Morgan. She is the high-potential individual the title promises, and she’s the odd one out in a room full of detectives. However, a flaw with season 1 was how easy Morgan found each case to be. The mom of three would look at a crime scene and almost immediately have a theory as to what happened.
While the other detectives often wanted to go the easy route and stick with the obvious explanations, Morgan pushed them to look deeper. This made her great at her job, but also made the episodes a tad predictable. If Morgan is always right, the show loses the necessary tension to keep viewers engaged.
Of course, in the High Potential season 2 premiere, Morgan does seem to be correct about the Game Maker, but it’s interesting to see the precinct start to lose confidence in her. Hopefully, this will motivate Morgan to excel even further in her job, while also encouraging her to adhere more closely to the rules, which may be necessary when people’s lives are at stake.
Morgan is an excellent character, but she too often fell into the Mary Sue stereotype in season 1. It’s hard for a character to grow when they’re never challenged or tested, and that’s exactly why High Potential season 2 must start testing Morgan in ways she’s never experienced.
Even brilliant characters must evolve, and for Morgan, it starts with accepting that she could be wrong, and that it’s not about her, but about the team. She may not like it, and, as she showed in the High Potential season 2 premiere, she may not handle it well. But if she wants to truly step into the role of LAPD consultant, then she has to learn to work with the team instead of against it. Morgan and the show will be better for it.
