As a further mark of respect, the Sri Lankan team decided to wear black armbands in the game. Players, officials, and fans alike extended their support to Wellalage during this personal tragedy.
Wellalage, who has been steadily cementing his place in Sri Lanka’s limited-overs setup, has earned praise for his composure both on and off the field. While it is never easy for a young player to cope with personal loss, his teammates and coaching staff have rallied around him. Earlier, several Sri Lankan cricketers posted heartfelt messages on social media, offering condolences and encouragement.

Once the tribute concluded, the focus shifted back to cricket. Bangladesh skipper Litton Das won the toss and elected to bowl first, looking to exploit the conditions at the start of the innings. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, retained their playing XI from the previous encounter, signaling confidence in their current combination.
Bangladesh, however, made a couple of notable changes. Nurul Hasan and Rishad Hossain were left out, paving the way for left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam and all-rounder Mahedi Hasan to return to the side. The inclusion of Shoriful bolstered Bangladesh’s pace attack, while Mahedi’s versatility added balance to the middle order.
