Thomas Frank praised Tottenham Hotspur’s “character and mentality” as they came from two goals down to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw against Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League.

It looked as though Bodo were on course for a shock first-ever Champions League win, thanks to Jens Petter Hauge’s second-half brace.

Hauge unleashed a stunning strike 53 minutes in to break the deadlock before Rodrigo Bentancur saw a goal disallowed shortly after for a foul in the build-up.

The Norwegian winger then netted his second of the match in the 66th minute, setting Bodo on course, but Micky Van de Ven sparked the Spurs’ fightback with a powerful header just two minutes later.

It was finally an 89th-minute own goal from Jostein Gundersen that yielded the draw for Spurs, with Richarlison’s pressure forcing the defender to turn Archie Gray’s low cross into his own net.

Reflecting on the performance, Frank praised his side’s resilience while acknowledging room for improvement after a lacklustre first half.

“I think there was definitely big character to fight back,” Frank told TNT Sports.

“I think that’s hugely important in any team that they have that and keep running, keep fighting, keep doing the right thing.

“And I think after the 2-0, we were, in a strange way, better. Maybe because Bodo dropped back, maybe we took more initiative, you know sometimes that’s the momentum of the game.

“But I felt that we kept doing the right thing, we kept moving the ball, kept reducing the situation from the side.”

Spurs came from two goals down to avoid defeat away from home in the Champions League for the third time, following a 2-2 draw with Juventus in February 2018 and a historic 3-2 win against Ajax in May 2019 on the way to that year’s final.

While Frank was pleased with his side’s grit, he was also full of praise for Bodo’s performance.

“We showed great character to come back into the game, which I’m very, very pleased with. But big praise to Bodo. I think until 2-0, they were the best team today.

“After that the game changed a bit and I think we got more on top. And of course we scored and then changed the equaliser, so they just showed exactly what I expected from them today.”

Despite the late fightback, Frank stressed that there is still work to be done, adding: “Of course I hope we could have done a little bit more first half, got a little bit more into the high pressure situations.

“And I would say especially on the ball I felt we could and should have kept the ball better in situations.

“We could have kept a little bit of structure and been a little bit brave, a little bit on the day, where you just need better touches, better decisions, better passes.”
