Chelsea are prepared to battle it out with Manchester United in the race to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, according to Teamtalk.
The Red Devils are keen on landing a marquee defensive midfielder in January and Wharton has emerged as a top target for the hierarchy.
United are ready to test Palace’s resolve with a £60 million bid in January, but they may not be alone in the pursuit of the Blackburn Rovers graduate.
Chelsea are also monitoring the England international, and could make an offer of their own for the 21-year-old when the transfer window reopens.
Wharton has yet to decide on his future, but he may want guaranteed playing time if he were to leave the Eagles at the turn of the year.
With the World Cup coming up next summer, the midfielder may want to play regularly to boost his selection prospects with the Three Lions.
In that case, United may have the upper hand over the Blues.
Chelsea have Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez as undisputed starters in the defensive midfield department.
United, on the other hand, are eyeing an upgrade on Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte. Wharton would offer that.
