Chelsea decided against signing Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain due to their apparent interest in AC Milan star Mike Maignan.
The Blues were tipped to land a new goalkeeper during the summer transfer window, and Maignan emerged as a top target before the Club World Cup.
However, a deal did not materialise due to differences over the price tag. Maignan ended up staying with the Rossoneri despite his contract expiring next summer.
TeamTalk now reveal that the Blues did not consider an approach for Donnarumma after he was deemed surplus to requirements by the European champions.
Chelsea are determined to reinforce the goalkeeping department in future, and they are reportedly optimistic of landing Maignan on a free transfer next summer.
This is reportedly a big reason why they did not pursue a deal for Donnarumma. Even if they did, his wage demands would have been a huge stumbling block.
Donnarumma has made an impressive start to his career with Manchester City. He has kept one clean sheet thus far for Pep Guardiola‘s men.
