Big Bash League: India legend Ravichandran Ashwin creates history by joining Sydney Thunder



Indian cricket legend Ravichandran Ashwin made history by signing with Sydney Thunder for the upcoming season of Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL). The announcement marks a milestone moment for the league, as Ashwin becomes the first male Indian international cricketer to feature in the BBL since its inception.

Ashwin will link up with the Thunder squad in January 2026, aiming to strengthen their campaign and help secure consecutive appearances in the BBL Finals. His arrival has been described as the biggest overseas signing in Thunder’s history, sparking excitement among fans and cricket followers worldwide.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s glittering career for India and in the IPL

The 39-year-old off-spinner boasts one of the most decorated careers in modern cricket. Across 287 international matches, Ashwin has taken 765 wickets, including a remarkable 537 scalps in Test cricket, placing him eighth on the all-time Test wicket-takers list. He was also a key figure in India’s triumphs at the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

His accolades include being named the ICC Cricketer of the Year and Test Cricketer of the Year in 2016, and selection in the ICC Men’s Test Team of the Decade (2011–2020).

Ashwin also leaves behind an extraordinary record in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he featured in 221 matches across 16 seasons. With 187 wickets, he sits fifth on the all-time IPL wicket charts, while also winning two titles with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2010 and 2011.

Having recently announced his retirement from both international cricket and the IPL, Ashwin’s move to the BBL is set to be his next big chapter.

Ashwin expresses excitement on joining Sydney Thunder

Speaking about his new challenge, Ashwin expressed his enthusiasm for joining Sydney Thunder and playing under David Warner’s leadership.

“Thunder were crystal clear about how they’d use me and brave enough to back it. My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we’re fully aligned on my role.

“I love how Dave Warner plays the game, and it’s always better when your leader shares your mindset. I can’t wait to perform for the Thunder Nation.”

His words reflect a strong alignment with the Thunder’s vision as they look to blend youth with experience in the upcoming season.

Thunder’s BBL|15 journey begins in December

Before Ashwin’s arrival in January 2026, Sydney Thunder will start their BBL|15 campaign with a grand final re-match against Hobart Hurricanes on December 16. They will then return home to ENGIE Stadium for the Sydney smash against rivals Sydney Sixers on December 20, setting the stage for another thrilling season.
