ABC’s High Potential May Get A 9-1-1 Crossover

In 2025, ABC’s Doctor Odyssey and 9-1-1 joined forces for an epic crossover, where 9-1-1 character Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) found herself working with the FBI on a case where The Odyssey was docked. A larger crossover wasn’t made possible after Doctor Odyssey’s abrupt cancellation, but there’s another crime drama that could take its spot alongside 9-1-1, High Potential.

While 9-1-1 focuses on the first responders of those in Los Angeles, High Potential centers on Morgan Gillory’s (Kaitlin Olson) position consulting for the LAPD. Both shows being set in LA make a potential crossover doable, especially after a lead actress and showrunners expressed interest in joining forces.

Jennifer Love Hewitt Wants A 9-1-1 Crossover

After the 9-1-1 crossover with Doctor Odyssey, actress Jennifer Love Hewitt (who portrays 9-1-1’s Maddie Han) wants to see a connection with the High Potential universe. According to Deadline, Hewitt shared that she’s “obsessed” with Kaitlin Olson’s Morgan.

“They’re in L.A., and she’s always referencing dispatch. And I’m like, ‘She has got to come to the dispatch center, or I have to go to hers.’ Or I feel like we could do both, like one of their episodes could end with her coming to my dispatch center, and then I could enter her next episode. But I just need to work with that show. I just wanna be on that show. I think it could be so fun.”

With both crime dramas in the ABC family, it is possible that 9-1-1 and High Potential could be in the same universe. Theoretically, there could be a crime scene that has Hewitt’s Maddie calling Morgan’s Major Crimes Unit to the scene. There are countless options.

“Wouldn’t that be cool? Same family. Same Disney. Same ABC. Same all that stuff. But I think it would be really fun, because her character is so fun, and I feel like she and Maddie would be really fun to watch together.”

Word got back to High Potential’s showrunner, Todd Harthan, who seemed excited about the potential to crossover with one of Ryan Murphy’s shows. In terms of the future, he would never say never.

“I’ll tell you this; if Ryan Murphy ever recalls, I’m taking that call. But I’ve not talked to Ryan Murphy, and I’m a big fan of Jennifer Love Hewitt for a long time, dating all the way back before I was even writing in this business.

Harthan stated that he’s never done a crossover before, but others have also suggested that High Potential join forces with another popular crime drama, The Rookie. Knowing Harthan is a big fan of Hewitt, however, and that she wants to work alongside Olson, future seasons of both shows just got a lot more interesting.

Kaitlin Olson’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is in its 17th season, an amazing accomplishment for TV. Because of her longstanding role on the sitcom, there have been a few Easter eggs on High Potential as a nod to her time on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

In the same interview with Deadline, Todd Harthan confirmed there have been subtle shoutouts to Philadelphia.

“Actually, there’s a couple of nods and winks here and there, little Easter eggs that, sometimes it’s her, sometimes it’s a writer who also happens to be a fan, which I have this year. But that was born from the writer, and she embraced it.”

With so many opportunities in the world of crossovers, the High Potential team would theoretically embrace the crossover with 9-1-1. A merge with 9-1-1 wouldn’t be Kaitlin Olson’s first crossover event. It’s Always Sunny crossed over with another Philly-based show, Abbott Elementary, last year.

The gang from Paddy’s Pub showed up at Abbott Elementary to assist the staff with community service in season 4 of Abbott Elementary, “Volunteers.” Likewise, in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Ava shows unseen footage of the gang during their time at Abbott in season 17’s “The Gang F***s Up Abbott Elementary.”

The two-part event unfolded in the same week with the same characters, forming a cohesive series of events between the two shows. The same could easily be done for High Potential and 9-1-1.
