HBO has a massive month ahead of it in January 2026, with two massively anticipated series either premiering or returning for another installment.
There’s no doubt that HBO has been a powerhouse for high-budget, theatrical-quality TV shows. Game of Thrones, especially, comes to mind, but it’s far from the only series that has left a mark. Still, with such massive undertakings, HBO has experienced some slow periods. That’s all about to change as the year rolls into 2026, since both the new A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and season 2 of The Pitt are slated to hit streaming.
Game Of Thrones’ Next Spinoff & The Pitt Season 2 Both Premiere In January 2026
As previously mentioned, Game of Thrones is likely to remain HBO’s figurehead for years to come. It’s for this reason that several spinoff series have been in the works, and the newest after House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will premiere its first season in January of 2026 (the exact date is still unknown). This is guaranteed to be a massive event for HBO.
If A Knight of the Seven Kingdom‘s premiere isn’t enough to get you excited for 2026, then The Pitt season 2 is sure to do it. Season 1 concluded in April 2025, so the next installment’s arrival in January 2026 is a thrillingly quick turnaround. It’s a sign that viewers can expect new episodes every year, which is certainly not something they got from Game of Thrones or its spinoff.
The Pitt, which stars ER‘s Noah Wyle, stands the best chance of replacing Game of Thrones as HBO’s biggest show. This makes the release of season 2 alongside A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms feel like a rather strategic move on HBO’s part. These are drastically different shows, but both have immense viewership potential—it’s a little something for everyone.
The Pitt May Take Over The Game Of Thrones Franchise’s Extended Awards Dominance
It’s interesting to note that, with new episodes of The Pitt arriving in 2026, this series will qualify for potential 2026 Emmy Award nominations. The show already did fantastically at this year’s ceremony, with 13 total nominations and five wins. HBO is now all set up to rake in even more with The Pitt next year, and, likely, several more years after that.
When Game of Thrones was ongoing and at the top of the charts, it was a constant feature at the Emmy Awards. The fantasy series kept HBO in the limelight, but its spinoff, House of the Dragon, hasn’t kept that going in the same way. Based on this year’s awards and the promise of more during the rollover of 2026, The Pitt is sure to be HBO‘s new Thrones, in a sense. Regardless, we have a lot to look forward to.
