Xbox Drops 2 Free Games This Weekend, No Game Pass Required

While PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass duke it out for the best deal in gaming this year, there are also plenty of promotions happening on Xbox for folks who don’t buy into the idea of paying to play online.

For instance, this weekend, Xbox is dropping two free games, both of which don’t require an Xbox Game Pass subscription. Make sure you jump in on them as soon as possible, before this promo goes away.

Play CoD: Black Ops 7 & FBC: Firebreak For Free

Two Shooters With Widely Different Experiences

Call of Duty Black Ops 7 Characters wield firearms, ready for battle.

Xbox is making two games completely free this weekend, and again, they do not require any tier of Xbox Game Pass, from the most basic up to Ultimate:

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 7
  • FBC: Firebreak

It’s an interesting drop, because both of them are online-centric shooters, and both are available under the Xbox Play Anywhere program. Black Ops 7 has multiple game modes, but thrives with its core PVP mode. While FBC: Firebreak is a co-op extraction-style shooter, where disparate classes meet up and take out enemies/solve objectives together. There’s also a progression system involved to encourage multiple runs, as well as additional difficulty settings.

Shooter fans are eating well this weekend, as both games are worth playing to some degree. While I don’t recommend trying to mainline the uneven Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 campaign this weekend, PVP and zombies are fun modes in their own right.

FBC: Firebreak, while not a smash hit, is likely going to appeal to fans of Remedy Entertainment. It has an unsettling art style (a compliment) and some unique mechanics that are worth a punt. Plus, you’ll benefit from weeks of patches and quality of life updates that weren’t present at launch.

For reference, there are two games that will be free to play this weekend if you have an Xbox Game Pass membership:

  • Sonic Racing: Crossworlds
  • Black Desert: Standard Edition

If you’re a kart-racing fan, I can heartily recommend trying the former. In fact, for a lot of people who aren’t Sonic megafans, a single weekend of play might be all you need to get the full experience.

Neither Game Will Be Free For Long

Enemy Hiss in FBC: Firebreak

Just know that FBC: Firebreak will be available until March 8, while Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will be removed from the promotion on March 9 at 10AM PT. Sonic Racing: Crossworlds and Black Desert: Standard Edition will be available until March 8 as well.

Given that you don’t need an Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription to join in on two of these games, every Xbox fan should take advantage of this drop if they haven’t played either of these games yet.
