Why HBO's Most Controversial Show Of All Time Is Suddenly Popular Again

Though it’s been four years since its latest episode, Euphoria is dominating HBO Max’s streaming charts. Created by Sam Levinson, the controversial teen drama series premiered on HBO in 2019, and aired its second season back in 2022. A few years and several rumors later, at long last, Euphoria season 3 is set to premiere later this year.

In the interim between seasons 2 and 3, Euphoria‘s main cast became hugely in-demand, with Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, and Jacob Elordi now some of the most prolific, talked-about stars today. Thankfully, their successful careers didn’t prevent them from returning to the show that made them famous, as they’re all back for Euphoria season 3 — the show’s most highly anticipated yet.

When a show has such a long wait between seasons, it risks losing the audience’s interest, but that’s definitely not the case for Euphoria. As of this writing, Euphoria is ranked number 5 on HBO Max’s list of top 10 most-watched shows in the US (via Flix Patrol).

It trails behind Game of Thrones spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Emmy-winning medical drama The Pitt, Canadian sleeper hit romance series Heated Rivalry, and finance drama Industry. These shows are either smash-hit newcomers or have recently premiered new seasons, making Euphoria a total outlier.

HBO Max is playing it smart and heavily marketing the new Euphoria season. Just last week, the streaming platform released the first trailer for Euphoria season 3, which revealed a five-year time jump in the storyline and the season’s release date — April 12, 2026. Based on its recent streaming success, it’s very likely that Euphoria will remain in the pop culture conversation until that day comes.

Why Euphoria Season 3 Took This Long

Though it’s clear that audiences are excited for Euphoria season 3, there was a time when many questioned if it would happen at all. After Euphoria season 2’s dramatic finale in 2022, a seemingly never-ending series of season 3 filming delays occurred, ranging from major Hollywood shakeups to tragedy to a rumored feud.

One major factor, not just limited to Euphoria, was the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that rocked the entertainment industry in 2023. Many productions were delayed — or shut down entirely. A much sadder reason for the Euphoria season 3 delays was the unexpected deaths of Angus Cloud, who played drug dealer Fez, and executive producer Kevin Turen.

In addition to these tragic events, rumored bad blood between Zendaya and Sam Levinson may have also contributed to the long wait for Euphoria season 3. Zendaya was reportedly angered by Levinson’s focus on The Idol — his 2023 sadomasochistic pop star drama series starring Lily Rose Depp that became one of HBO’s biggest critical failures — at the expense of Euphoria.

The Rue Bennett actress even asked for a meeting with HBO executives to voice her concerns for Euphoria‘s future (via THR). However, the issue was resolved enough for Euphoria season 3 to go into production, filming from February to November 2025.

Euphoria Season 3 Will Be Massive For HBO

Euphoria season 3 is over two months away, but excitement is building to a fever pitch. The show has always been a winner for HBO, but now that many of its cast members are among the biggest celebrities in the world, anticipation is even higher.

The time jump was risky, as Euphoria branded itself as TV’s edgiest teen show, and now the characters are young adults. However, it looks like that risk will pay off because, if the controversial Euphoria season 3 trailer is any indication, it will be the show’s buzziest yet.

Though Rue, Cassie, Nate and co. are no longer in high school, their lives are just as messy and complicated. Rue is in Mexico, trying to pay off her debts to drug dealer Laurie, while Cassie and Nate are engaged and living in the suburbs. Much to Nate’s anger, Cassie is making a living as an OnlyFans-style adult content creator, a storyline that has sparked much conversation and outrage over social media.

Though it could be argued that the online pearl-clutching over a job in sex work is a bit excessive, it seems like Euphoria is being intentionally provocative with this storyline — and that’s just the trailer. This, combined with all the real-life controversies surrounding Sydney Sweeney, will be more than enough to generate discussion, and the Euphoria season 3 conversation is just getting started.
