Who Is High Voltage? (SPOILERS)

WARNING! THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE MASKED SINGER SEASON 14!

The Masked Singer season 14 contestant High Voltage’s identity has been one of the season’s biggest mysteries, but his clue packages have proved that he’s most likely retired professional soccer player, Alexi Lalas. The Masked Singer season 14 welcomed back panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Rita Ora, along with host Nick Cannon. So far, High Voltage has performed on Fear Night and Red, White, and Clue Night, singing electrifying renditions of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears and “Miles On It” by Kane Brown and Marshmello.

The Masked Singer panelists had many guesses for High Voltage’s identity on Fear Night, thinking that he could be a talk show host such as Conan O’Brien (Robin) or an athlete such as Julian Edelman (Jenny). On Red, White, and Clue Night, they continued to think that he could be a talk show host, with Robin sticking with his Conan O’Brien guess, and Jenny going with Jimmy Fallon. Ken went a different route and guessed John Stamos. However, the clues all point in a different direction: Alexi Lalas.

The Masked Singer season 14 contestant High Voltage’s costume is filled with clues that prove he’s most likely Alexi. A soccer ball appears inside of the head of the costume, referencing Alexi’s career as a professional soccer player. The number 22 is printed on the front of the costume because Alexi wore number 22 for the United States Men’s National Team in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, and for Calcio Padova when he played in Italy’s Serie A.

During The Masked Singer season 14 Fear Night, High Voltage stated that, when he first began his career, the idea of blending in was his biggest fear. He was always more interested in being a leader in his field. High Voltage added that sometimes you’ve got to get a little crazy to draw a lot of attention. He listened to his gut and billions took notice. During the 1994 World Cup, Alexi was known for his distinct look, which included long red hair, a long red goatee, and a headband.

In his Fear Night clue package, High Voltage mentioned being called a revolutionary. This is because Alexi played for the New England Revolution soccer team from 1996-1997.

A Rose Bowl clue on that night referenced Alexi’s participation in the United States’ 2-1 upset victory over Colombia in the 1994 FIFA World Cup game played at the Rose Bowl, in which he was a standout player. On Red, White, and Clue Night, High Voltage stated that he became a national icon, which is exactly what happened to Alexi. The eagle clue from Fear Night was a nod to this because the eagle is a symbol of America.

The Fear Night clue with a cup with a picture of the world on it had the panelists thinking that High Voltage was a talk show host, but it actually referred to Alexi playing in the World Cup.

The Masked Singer panelists also picked up on the flashing “on air” sign in High Voltage’s Red, White, and Clue Night clue package, and thought that it meant that he was a talk show host. However, this was actually a reference to Alexi’s career as a sports commentator. He’s also the host of Alexi Lalas’ State of the Union, in which he discusses the biggest stories in soccer.

High Voltage’s Clues Referenced Alexi’s Iconic Look

In the 1990s, Alexi was known for having long red hair and a long beard, which was goatlike. A goat appeared in his Red, White, and Clue Night clue package, which could refer to his look, or to the fact that some consider him the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of soccer.

Gingerbread cookies in High Voltage’s The Masked Singer Red, White, and Clue Night clue package represented Alexi’s red hair. He also released an album called Ginger in 1998.

High Voltage’s Family Life Matched Alexi’s Backstory

One of High Voltage’s The Masked Singer Fear Night clues was a container of grease, but this actually referenced Greece, the country from which his father hails. On Red, White, and Clue Night, High Voltage mentioned that his dad immigrated to the United States with a passion for science, while his mom was a poet. Alexi’s father is Demetrios Lalas, a professor, who later became the director of Greece’s national observatory, while his mother, Anne Harding Woodworth is a published poet.

High Voltage’s Clue Package Hinted At Alexi’s Music Career

On The Masked Singer season 14 Red, White, and Clue Night, one of High Voltage’s clues was a guitar. He explained, “I’ve had this by my side since I was thirteen. It reminds me that the greatest comes from finding your rhythm and sticking with it.” Alexi is an accomplished musician, who’s released eight solo albums, including Far from Close (1996), Ginger (1998), So It Goes (2010), Infinity Spaces (2014), Shots (2016), Sunshine (2018), Look at You (2019), and Melt Away (2022). Alexi has also played in a band called The Gypsies, and they even opened for Hootie & the Blowfish in 1998 during their European tour.

Although nothing is confirmed yet, High Voltage’s Masked Singer clue packages seem to indicate that he’s Alexi. He’s impressed everyone with his stunning performances, so it’s highly likely that he’ll make it all the way to the finale, and possibly even take home the Golden Mask Trophy. Whoever High Voltage turns out to be, he’s a powerful addition to The Masked Singer season 14.

The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
