Day two of the fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford began with a dramatic turn of events, as Ravindra Jadeja, India’s in-form middle-order batter, was dismissed under contentious circumstances. The early breakthrough for England not only shifted the momentum firmly in their favour but also ignited a debate that is likely to dominate discussions for the remainder of this crucial encounter in the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy.
Ravindra Jadeja departs for 20
The morning session was barely underway when Jofra Archer, returning to his menacing best, delivered a pivotal blow. In the 84th over, with the fifth ball of his spell, Archer unleashed an away-swinger that Jadeja, who had looked uncomfortable against the moving ball all morning, tentatively poked at. The result was a thick edge that flew towards the slips. Harry Brook, positioned at second slip, showcased remarkable athleticism, diving sharply to his right to complete a low, dipping catch inches from the turf. The immediate reaction from the English fielders was one of jubilation, while Jadeja, after a brief moment of hesitation, began his long walk back to the pavilion.
However, the nature of the catch, particularly its proximity to the ground, immediately sparked discussion among fans on social media. While the on-field umpire’s decision stood, replays offered a degree of ambiguity, with some suggesting the ball might have grazed the ground before settling in Brook’s grasp. Archer, though not bowling at express pace, had maintained a venomous line and length around the 135 kph mark, exploiting Jadeja’s discomfort.
This has been given out. Nice one ECB 🫡

The all-rounder, who had almost edged the first ball of the over to gully, finally succumbed to the persistent pressure. Jadeja’s wicket was a significant setback for India, especially given his recent batting prowess in English conditions, where he has consistently provided stability and crucial runs.

Indian all-rounders fights back amidst the storm
Following Jadeja’s controversial exit, the onus fell squarely on India’s lower middle order to mount a resistance. Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur, known for their gritty performances with the bat, stepped up to the challenge. Facing a rejuvenated English bowling attack, spearheaded by Archer and supported by the relentless pressure from the other pacers, the duo displayed commendable resilience. Their partnership, though not without its anxious moments, became vital in preventing a complete collapse. Sundar, with his composed technique, and Thakur, with his aggressive yet calculated approach, absorbed the pressure, frustrating the English bowlers who were keen to wrap up the innings swiftly.
At the drinks break, India were 306/5, with Thakur on 39 and Sundar unbeaten on 11.
