James Anderson continues to remind the cricketing world why he is regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time. Leading Lancashire in their County Championship Division Two clash against Northamptonshire, the 43-year-old seamer delivered a spell that felt like a throwback to his prime years.

On the second day at Northampton, Anderson produced a brilliant performance, finishing with figures of 5 for 64 in just 13 overs. His spell tore through the Northamptonshire top order, reducing them to a precarious 41 for 5 early in the innings. It was a decisive moment that shifted the balance of the match firmly in Lancashire’s favour.

Despite some resistance from the lower order, Northamptonshire ended the day at 215 for 9, still trailing Lancashire’s first-innings total of 384 by 169 runs. Anderson wasn’t alone in his efforts, as Tom Bailey provided excellent support with three wickets, but it was the skipper who led the charge with precision and control.

What stood out was not just the wickets, but the manner in which Anderson claimed them. His ability to swing the ball both ways, maintain tight lines, and outthink batters showed that experience can often outweigh raw pace.

This performance marked Anderson’s 56th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket – a remarkable milestone that further cements his legacy. It was also his first five-for in two years, with his previous one coming in 2024 against Nottinghamshire, where he had taken an outstanding 7 for 35.

With this achievement, Anderson now stands alongside some of cricket’s most iconic names. He has matched the tally of Richie Benaud, John Snow and Ravichandran Ashwin, placing him firmly among the elite in the history of the game. His overall first-class numbers are equally staggering – 1,148 wickets in 305 matches – a testament to his longevity and consistency.

The highlight of his spell came when he dismissed Ricardo Vasconcelos with a beautifully crafted delivery that jagged back in to hit the stumps. It was a classic Anderson wicket – built on patience, skill, and an understanding of conditions.

He later returned to break a crucial partnership by removing Louis Kimber, sealing his five-wicket haul and effectively ending any hopes of a Northamptonshire recovery.

This match also marked Anderson’s first outing as Lancashire’s permanent red-ball captain for the 2026 season. Having made his debut for the county back in 2001, he now leads the side with the same determination that defined his playing career. His leadership began on a strong note, with Lancashire posting a solid total thanks to contributions from Luke Wells, Josh Bohannon and Michael Jones.
