Tyrese Gibson Hints At Potential Transformers Return After Call With Michael Bay

Original Transformers star Tyrese Gibson drops a new hint that a comeback for his character could be on the horizon. Gibson made his debut as USAF Tech Sergeant Epps in Michael Bay’s 2007 adaptation of the hit Hasbro toy line.

Gibson returned as Epps in two of Bay’s sequels, but hasn’t been seen in the franchise since Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011). Since then, there have been four live-action films, with the most recent being Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023) from director Steven Caple Jr.

In a new interview with @wholetusoutmovies, Gibson reveals that he just recently connected with Bay, seemingly regarding his return in a new Transformers movie. The actor is careful not to reveal any details, though, keeping his cards close to his chest. Check out his comment below:

“I was just on the phone with Michael Bay last week, so that’s all I can tell you.”

What This Means For Transformers

The future of the Transformers franchise remains somewhat up in the air at the moment. Though Rise of the Beasts was supposed to serve as the first installment in a new trilogy, the film wasn’t a major hit at the box office, raising questions about whether this is still the case.

Among these three new films is an announced Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover. After the success of Transformers One (2024), director Josh Cooley is reported to have a live-action film in the works. In addition, it was recently reported that Bay is developing a new Transformers movie, and this is seemingly the one Gibson would appear in.

Rise of the Beasts was positioned as a soft reboot, but Gibson’s return would mean a pivot back to previous storylines. Gibson coming back as Epps would open the door for a return from Josh Duhamel as Captain Lennox and John Turturro as Agent Simmons. Technically, Shia LaBeouf could return as Sam Witwicky, though this seems unlikely given his negative comments about the franchise.

It remains unclear whether Bay’s new film is one he would direct or just oversee as more of a hands-on producer, but his last entry as director, 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight, was not well-received. Pivoting back to the original trilogy, however, could capitalize on audience nostalgia.

Our Take On Tyrese Gibson’s Possible Transformers Return

If Gibson returns in a future Transformers movie, it seems very likely that Duhamel would also return, just given how connected those two characters have been previously. Getting the whole band back together, including LaBeouf and Megan Fox, could actually be just what the franchise needs in the midst of seemingly dwindling audience interest.

Unfortunately, seeing LaBeouf and Fox back in a Transformers movie is incredibly unlikely. Hopefully, though, Bay chooses to get back in the director’s chair for this one, as his talents are a good fit for this franchise. Given Gibson’s recent comments, more updates could be coming in the near future.
