Tuchel set to sign new deal to remain England head coach

Thomas Tuchel is set to sign a two-year contract extension as England head coach, ending speculation around his future.

Tuchel’s current deal was due to expire after this summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico and he had already been linked with taking over at Manchester United.

But widespread reports this morning suggested the German is ready to commit his short-term future to the Three Lions and lead the country into the 2028 European Championship which will be co-hosted by England, along with Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

Tuchel took on the England job, succeeding Gareth Southgate, in January 2025 and oversaw the team’s impressive qualification for this summer’s showpiece with eight wins from eight qualifying games.

The 52-year-old is reportedly excited at the prospect of managing England in a major championship on home soil and has prioritised that over returning to club management in which he enjoyed great success with Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

Tuchel held preliminary talks with United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the summer of 2024 before the club handed Erik ten Hag a new deal. Ten Hag was sacked the following October and replaced by Ruben Amorim.

Amorim was dismissed by United last month and Michael Carrick appointed interim manager until the summer. Carrick has won four and drawn one of his first five games in charge.
