Donald Trump is known for his offensive remarks to female news correspondents when they try to pull him up on subjects he doesn’t want to talk about, and he’s done it again. When Kaitlan Collin attempted to question Trump on the latest release of Epstein files, he defaulted to attacking her about her appearance, ignoring her line of inquiry.
Despite asking a very valid question about the redactions in the Epstein files, Donald Trump refused to answer her question. Instead, he brought attention to her appearance, addressing the room with: “She’s a young woman. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile. I’ve known you for 10 years. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a smile on your face.” He continued, insulting her and attacking CNN, the company she works for.
He told her that she was dishonest, and the reason she didn’t smile was that she was a liar. “You know why you’re not smiling? Because you know you’re not telling the truth,” he told her. Rather than answer her question, he repeatedly cut her off with insults and derogatory statements about her professionalism and appearance. Despite trying to continue her line of questioning, Trump ignored her and moved on to the next question.
As he stated in the conference, “I think maybe it’s now time for the country to get onto something else,” in reference to the new information on Epstein. He claimed that, because he wasn’t in the files, allegedly, they no longer matter, and the country should move its focus elsewhere.
As a result, Kaitlan Collins’ question about the effect of the Epstein file redactions on survivors was never answered by Trump. Since the event, Collins has spoken to various outlets about the insults and the implications of his obvious avoidance of the question. CNN has also stood by her as one of its professional journalists.
Collins avoided lowering herself to returning his insults, instead taking the professional approach by trying to break down just why Trump was so keen not to answer any questions surrounding the files. As she stated on The Source, his reaction “shed some light” on how he views them. “He views things through the lens of how it affects him,” she said, attempting to explain his avoidance.
This isn’t the first time Trump has attacked female journalists based on their appearance when they attempt a line of questioning he doesn’t particularly like. In the past, the President of the United States called women piggy, dogs, and slobs in the past. Female journalists who hope to question Trump need to be prepared to have their appearance attacked.
Collins’ line of questioning wasn’t about what Trump’s involvement with Epstein was. She was hoping to find out what Trump thought of the redactions and the effect that would have on many of the women involved in the files. However, all Trump heard was questions about himself, and he responded with insults and a less-than-subtle side step.
