Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid played down another spat with tight end Travis Kelce after his team registered their first win of the season, a 22-9 success over the New York Giants.
Just a week after the pair clashed during the defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles, they came into contact again with a heated verbal exchange on the sidelines before veteran coach Reid bumped Kelce with his shoulder.
The incident came in the second quarter with the Chiefs winning 6-0 but their offense failing to spark.
I love Travis, says Reid
Reid, who has led Kansas City to three Super Bowl triumphs, was quick to play down the row and instead heaped praise on the 35-year-old fiancé of pop superstar Taylor Swift.
“I love Travis’ passion, man,” said Reid. “I’m OK with that. We didn’t have enough of it in the second quarter. It wasn’t where we needed it to be, so, within reason, he knows when to back off the pedal and knows when to push it too.
“That’s the part I love about him. The guy is all-in. Sometimes, I have to be the policeman. He’s an emotional guy.”
Speaking on the New Heights podcast he hosts alongside brother Jason following the Eagles game, Kelce said: “I’ve got to be there for my guys, knowing that [the coaches] put a lot on my plate to be a good player for this team.
”I need to answer that bell, man.”
Reid asks media to lay off Kelce
And Reid urged the media not to scrutinise Kelce’s attitude too much, adding: “Don’t make too much of it.
“He’s a passionate guy, and I love that part. I’ve been through a lot of things with him. That’s all part of it. I love that he loves to play the game. That’s what I love. It’s an emotional game, so I’ll take it.”
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 224 yards and a touchdown to get the better of counterpart Russell Wilson, who endured a night to forget, throwing two interceptions and getting jeered by the home crowd at MetLife Stadium.
