Toronto FC v Inter Miami

Match preview for Toronto FC v Inter Miami

Toronto FC will close out a disappointing MLS season with four matches left to play, starting with a home clash against Inter Miami at BMO Field on Saturday.

For the Reds, this fixture is more about pride than points. They’ve been out of play-off contention for some time and will simply be aiming to end the campaign on a positive note.

Miami, on the other hand, are locked in a battle at the top. The Herons have already sealed their playoff place and remain firmly in contention for a second straight Supporters’ Shield.

Toronto have not lifted that trophy since 2017 – the same year they won MLS Cup – but this year has been a major letdown despite the appointment of Robin Fraser as head coach.

A return of only five wins from 30 matches (17% win rate) reflects just how tough 2025 has been for the Canadian side.

Fraser’s points-per-game record sits at 0.87, significantly lower than the 1.34 he achieved at the Colorado Rapids. TFC are winless in eight, though six of those ended in draws, showing at least some resilience.

The challenge awaiting them now is daunting: Inter Miami are flying high, chasing Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia Union with two games in hand.

Their 64 goals this season make them the most prolific team in MLS, and Javier Mascherano has made it clear what the target is: “If we can win the next five games that we have, that will be great, and we will have a chance to fight for the Supporters’ Shield.”

Miami are unbeaten in their last five against Toronto and have only lost twice in 12 meetings overall. The reverse fixture ended 1-1 – the only draw in the history of this matchup – but judging by Miami’s 4-0 demolition of New York City FC midweek, Toronto may be in for another difficult evening.

Team news for Toronto FC v Inter Miami

Toronto’s injury list is extensive. Kevin Long (leg) is the latest addition to a defence already missing Henry Wingo (thigh), Zane Monlouis (hip), and Nickseon Gomis (Achilles). Forward DeAndre Kerr is also unavailable.

On a brighter note, Jonathan Osorio and Djordje Mihailovic are both fit and in form, with three combined goal contributions in their last three matches.

For Miami, Mascherano welcomes back Telasco Segovia after suspension, while Fabrice Picault is also available again following a quad strain. However, David Ruiz and Allen Obando remain sidelined with hamstring issues.

The standout threat, of course, is Lionel Messi. Fresh off another brace, he now has 24 goals in 23 games and leads the MLS scoring charts.

The Argentine has set yet more records: the first player in league history with at least 35 goal involvements in back-to-back seasons, and eight multi-goal games in his last 12 appearances.

Expected line-ups for Toronto FC v Inter Miami

Toronto: Gavran; Thompson, Rosted, Petretta, Laryea; Coello, Mihailovic, Cifuentes; Corbeanu, Osorio, Etienne

The stats for Toronto FC v Inter Miami

Miami are the league’s highest scorers with 64 goals. Toronto, meanwhile, have struggled badly at home, netting just 12 in 15 matches at BMO Field.

Head-to-head history favours Miami, with five unbeaten against Toronto and only two losses in their last 12 meetings.

Prediction

Given Toronto’s attacking struggles and Miami’s relentless form, the visitors look set to dominate. Messi’s goal-scoring streak makes him a constant danger, and Mascherano’s side have both the firepower and depth to secure another result.

Prediction: Toronto 0-2 Inter Miami
