The NYT’s Tiles puzzle is a fun game that doesn’t require you to think about words at all. In this way, it is a nice way to wind down from the other word-based puzzles that the NYT puts out every day. It requires a lot less thinking, and it is much harder to lose this one. It is meditative and fun, although you still get a score that you can use to compare your scores every day, and perhaps see which of your friends has the best picture-matching abilities.

This puzzle is hard to figure out, in my opinion, as it is just confusing enough to make things hard to parse out. There is a fair amount of crossover between categories as well. There are also a few words that look like proper nouns that aren’t and vice versa – a free clue for you. If you need anything else, I have more clues waiting for you just below to help you separate the categories and get them all right.

• One category is about words that represent what a category is in a more literal sense
• One category is about words that all have a similar ending
• One category is about four titles all relating to the same kind of story, all with a very similar subject

Yellow Answers: Revealed & Explained

This was the easy one today, and it is not a bad GROUP of words to have to put together. The weird addition here is CONSTELLATION, only because that word is also in the name of another category. I think it can also easily be placed with ZODIAC and TAROT, which is another way for you to get a little confused. This could cause you to have some issues with both this category and the following ones. While I managed to get this one, I did struggle with the rest.

Green Answers: Revealed & Explained

I thought this was the hardest one to get, as it depends on you reading it out loud, or recognizing the spelling pattern. I think I would be more liable to recognize it as a category of French words, as opposed to the pronunciation itself. That might not be the norm for everyone, but that is where my brain would connect them. TAROT still seems like it should go elsewhere, which I think is what messed me up more than anything on this one.

Blue Answers: Revealed & Explained

I really wanted DRACONIAN to go with the vast majority of words in this category. I also had many words that I wanted ZODIAC to go with, and I never was able to quite get there. By the end, I was one away, but due to the fact that I had put a lot of wrong guesses together, it didn’t matter, and I failed on this category. However, I blame the green category for the largest of my problems.

Purple Answers: Revealed & Explained

I thought DRACONIAN and LIBRARY might go together, as they sort of have the same aesthetic to them. However, I also considered HYDRANT for a moment as I thought about the Hydra, which turned out to be mostly correct, but I had dismissed it because of the “nt” at the very end of the word. It made it difficult to finish off the puzzle and feel good about it, but I finally got there in the end.
