As the new DC Universe starts to cast new actors for major roles, the studio already might have the perfect talent for a certain Justice League hero in-house, as DC needs to give this animated voice actor a shot at his role in live-action. James Gunn’s DCU has plans for multiple different mediums beyond just live-action movies and shows.
Right from the start, Gunn made it clear that DCU actors would play their characters in live-action, animation, and video games. That got me thinking about DC’s animated movie universes. The franchise has done wonderful work in that space, and Gunn is aware of that, as Supergirl voice actress Meg Donnelly was the runner-up for the DCU hero. As such, another star deserves a shot.
Liam McIntyre Voiced Aquaman In DC’s Animated Tomorrowverse
Donnelly voiced Supergirl in DC’s animated Tomorrowverse franchise, going as far as screen testing for the role, but being the runner-up to Milly Alcock. That same franchise included quite a few other actors who could play their characters in live-action, such as Supernatural‘s Jensen Ackles, a popular Batman fancast. However, Aquaman is the hero that the DCU should look at the Tomorrowverse for.
Liam McIntyre voiced Aquaman in multiple Justice League movies set in the Tomorrowverse. The franchise got that name from its first film, 2020’s Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Funny enough, James Gunn’s DCU Superman sequel is called Man of Tomorrow, also using the hero’s nickname. McIntyre played a rugged yet regal Aquaman. His version of the Justice League hero was a smart man of action.
Why Liam McIntyre Is Perfect For Aquaman In James Gunn’s DC Universe
Having that kind of experience as Aquaman would certainly help McIntyre in the DCU. The previous live-action Aquaman, played by Jason Momoa in the DCEU, was notably grittier, louder, and funnier than the hero is in the comics. Aquaman’s blonde hair was also gone, and he had a more rugged look. I believe McIntyre would be the perfect face for the Aquaman transition.
The actor looks remarkably similar to Aquaman from the comics, but with an edge to him that comes closer to Momoa’s version. His animated Aquaman in DC’s Tomorrowverse also falls along the same lines. Additionally, McIntyre has proven action chops from leading Spartacus, and he has more superhero experience, both at DC and Marvel.
The Australian actor voiced Captain Boomerang in two animated DC movies. He has also joined the franchise in live-action, playing Weather Wizard in Grant Gustin’s The Flash series. Additionally, McIntyre will have a big 2026, as he gives life to Logan in the highly anticipated game Marvel’s Wolverine. At 43, Liam McIntyre’s Aquaman could be an experienced hero and ruler in the DCU.
