Things Just Got A Lot Worse For The Rings Of Power

The Rings of Power has been fighting an uphill battle as it expands the world of The Lord of the Rings, but things will get a lot worse in 2026. The Rings of Power explores the world of Mordor long before the Fellowship was entrusted with the One Ring.

While these stories are adapted from the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, which created the foundation for TLotR and The Hobbit films, the show takes a much more experimental approach to the Middle-earth series. Largely due to the fact that they are not based on a single book, but bits and pieces of Tolkien’s writings that have been used to establish the world of his stories.

And with The Rings of Power’s monumental budget from Prime Video, the series has been under intense scrutiny since it began in 2022. But things are set to be much more challenging for the show in 2026 as they encounter a brand-new challenge from the very stories that made it possible to create the series in the first place.

The Lord Of The Rings Movies Will Be Re-Released In 2026

Peter Jackson’s visionary The Lord of the Rings trilogy is set to return to theaters in 2026, with each entry being shown in an extended form and providing audiences another chance to fall in love with this spectacular series. From the visuals to the epic scale of the stories, this will be absolutely huge for one of the most popular fantasy stories ever made.

The movies are being brought back ahead of the 2027 release of Andy Serkis’ Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which will further expand the story of the original trilogy, and has been backed by Peter Jackson as an executive producer alongside Gollum actor Serkis, who has taken on the role of director.

While this will likely mean there is a general boost in interest for a show like The Rings of Power, it will also have a negative effect that could be detrimental for the series.

The Rings Of Power Has Been Compared To The Films From The Start

As with any spin-off, The Rings of Power has been compared to the original films relentlessly. Despite being a prequel and including almost none of the characters who will appear in the trilogy, the series is held to a high standard of scrutiny as the fan base looks for ways in which it lives up to the original.

Now, that is a fair thing to do with a show that has a core connection to the movies, and one that is set in the same place, and based on the same writings, but it also creates expectations that are difficult to contend with. With TLotR, some audiences had never read the books or seen earlier adaptations.

However, there was also a fan base that already held Tolkien’s stories in high regard, and when the Peter Jackson movies were released, they were compared against these novels, and occasionally, that led to people feeling intensely upset about how the stories were taken and altered to make them work in a film format.

It’s natural for a fan base to hold tight to the work that they love, but it can also lead to intense scrutiny that is unfair and fails to assess the new project on its own merit. And with these movies returning to the theaters, it is likely to further cement the opinions of die-hard fans of the trilogy, and possibly even overshadow the series itself.

Will The Rings Of Power Season 3 Be The One To Win Over All Fans?

With such an epic-scale production, the result of this series being one of the most expensive ever produced, The Rings of Power has been slow to release more seasons. After debuting in 2022, season 2 of the show was not released until 2024, and that trend is likely to continue with season 3.

At present, the release date for season 3 is unconfirmed, though filming on the season has wrapped in late 2025. With editing and the sheer volume of special effects that will need to be added, the show is expected to be released sometime in late 2026 or even 2027.

Unfortunately, this means that The Rings of Power may be directly competing with the re-releases for attention, or even the new film, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. If that is the case, it could prove considerably more challenging for The Rings of Power season 3 to win over audiences and convince them that the show is as worthy of being followed as the films.

However, it is set to build on the story already established in the first two seasons of the show, and those earlier seasons have developed a loyal fan base of their own.

It’s nearly impossible to predict whether the show will succeed or fail with The Rings of Power season 3, and the fact that The Lord of the Rings movies will also be coming back to theaters could also serve as a help or a hindrance to winning over the audience.
